Minions and Monsters
Tonight's Episode
Bello!
We are finally able to talk about THE theatrical event of the year: Minions and Monsters!
Unsurprisingly, this movie had both Emily and Monika buzzing with excitement. But don't worry there are also some tough questions tackled in this one like "If you bite into a minion, what is the texture?" and "Do the minions have a beauty standard?"
In this episode we also manage to cover Jackass: Best and Last (again) and the 2022 showbiz epic Babylon.

[SPEAKER_02]: Hello and welcome to medium-literate the podcast where two longtime best friends try to sharpen our media literacy skills by talking about a new movie in theaters every week. [SPEAKER_02]: My name is Emily Fay and my co-host is Monica Scott. [SPEAKER_02]: And this week, we are talking minions and monsters the long awaited highly anticipated minions and monsters.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's full of spoilers. [SPEAKER_02]: If you can spoil a minion's movie, I don't know if you can. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if that's really the point of the minions, but we loved it. [SPEAKER_02]: We're wearing yellow for the occasion. [SPEAKER_02]: And there's some visual stuff on this episode. [SPEAKER_02]: And if you go to our YouTube, you can watch the full video episode there. [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, enjoy the show.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hello, hello, hello, we have a third co-host today. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and what is that one's name? [SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember? [SPEAKER_01]: I can't do an ask for me that. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, I can cut that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I thought maybe you knew I didn't mean to you. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't! [UNKNOWN]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, for listeners who don't see the video, Emily has a minion with her, and I'm dressed like a minion. [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm wearing yellow, so not nice, but mom can come in. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I'm sort of, I would say actually, I'm dressed like I'm minion bounding. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not quite, yeah, I don't own, I don't own denim overall, so I have a bit of a, I took a bit of a swing with the only blue overalls slash only overalls.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe in a bounding. [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm minion mommy-ing, because he's my baby boy. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's just another ad for the YouTube channel if you're listening to an audio. [SPEAKER_01]: When you could see, you could see the types of things we committed to film. [SPEAKER_01]: So we're here to talk about minions and monsters today. [SPEAKER_01]: Emily, are you ready? [SPEAKER_02]: I have never been more ready in my life. [SPEAKER_02]: This is what the entire podcast so far has been leading to.
[SPEAKER_01]: Incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: And did you enjoy this movie? [SPEAKER_02]: Perfect film. [SPEAKER_02]: A perfect, a perfect film. [SPEAKER_01]: I would say. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: And I also had a lot of fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Would you say a perfect film?
[SPEAKER_01]: I liked it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean it was a great, it was, it was a great animated movie. [SPEAKER_01]: Famously not my genre of choice but we can go into that in a little bit But I would say I like Alex and I both had like a blast seeing the movie and I got a yellow dinner beforehand I was they gave us a little keychain when we were so jealous of your keychain I can't believe they gave you I assumed you would get one because of MC and Dolby
[SPEAKER_01]: Here's what I think is happening because actually when I went to see jackass they gave me a poster did you get a poster? [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I keep doing this thing because I'm a freak with nothing else going on really other than work. [SPEAKER_01]: So I keep going like opening night showing like the Thursday night this I saw on Wednesday night. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, and so I think I'm getting these like opening, like the jackass ticket I got said, like opening night event, but it was just a Showing of the movie like I didn't really I thought that just meant because of the day you're seeing it right, but but they clarified when we were checking in for jackass she was like [SPEAKER_01]: Did you get the opening night tickets or just regular jackass tickets?
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I don't know what I think it says opening night and she was like, okay, you get a poster, but they're face down because it's naughty. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, look at my legs. [SPEAKER_01]: And then the poster was just like, Steve Owen is back with a firecracker shooting out of his ass. [SPEAKER_01]: So I can see why they covered that if they're also screening toy store, or you're with a person at the time. [SPEAKER_02]: I also wonder because I feel like when I see stuff opening night that opening night event isn't always necessarily even an option.
[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if it's smaller market versus bigger market where they're like, we don't want to have enough stuff for the, you know, usually something like that, it's showing in so many different theaters within a theater in LA. [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, jackass would have been like three theaters full of people and I'm like maybe they just like know that in your theaters They don't have to have as much stuff I mean that could certainly that is true The audience size of almost every movie I go to but except for minions, which was like packed But yeah, that could definitely be the case
[SPEAKER_01]: I also assume it's like AMC specific what you're always going to do so that's still, but I do assume that it's like some kind of deal the studio is doing with AMC like we'll give you this many things, but yeah, they're probably choosing the markets. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so sorry, I'm in a freebie market. [SPEAKER_02]: I look usually I wouldn't care, but [SPEAKER_02]: That keychain I What a love that keychain. [SPEAKER_01]: I would really treasure it back to you We'll make sure to put a picture of the keychain up on the Instagram.
[SPEAKER_02]: So everyone can see my family Air though I Also look before we get into minions as excited as I am to get in the minions. [SPEAKER_02]: I did see jackass Which I couldn't talk about last week because I hadn't seen it because I'm fast [SPEAKER_02]: Yes correct and I mean there were a cut there was one early moment in particular that really felt like a jackass bit in the minions with the cyclops When he sits on the anyways
[SPEAKER_02]: I just wanted to give a real quick rundown of my... [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: So, once again, loved poopies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Even with the lip filler? [SPEAKER_02]: Even with the lip filler? [SPEAKER_02]: I... pooped. [SPEAKER_02]: He had one of the best moments, which was the... [SPEAKER_02]: The... the baltezer. [SPEAKER_02]: And then when he just falls straight onto the full, then almost runs down the hill. [SPEAKER_02]: which then also the Cyclops falls down the hill. [SPEAKER_02]: The Cyclops is boopies and also, I think, one thing that really touched me about it was that I feel like we are living in a cultural moment of, oh shit, you froze.
[SPEAKER_02]: Open. [SPEAKER_02]: Hi. [SPEAKER_02]: Monica is in a summer lightning storm. [SPEAKER_01]: So all the power went out for a second. [SPEAKER_01]: And we stopped recording, but we're back. [SPEAKER_01]: We're back. [SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about jackass. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I had one last, okay, which is that something that I unexpectedly found very touching about it as a, you know, aside from the friendship and the all that is that I feel like we are living in such an era of like people, [SPEAKER_02]: treating their bodies in such a way that it's like, you know, keeping a collector doll in the box.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like we have like billionaires like that Brian Johnson guy trying to like reverse aging everyone's obsessed with like macros and macros and like, [SPEAKER_02]: I can't go in the sun between this time and this time. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's just like, or with the Kardashians, it's like, oh, well, just don't smile or use your face because that causes wringled. [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like we're just in an era of everybody treating their bodies like, [SPEAKER_02]: trying to wrap themselves in bubble wrap to like preserve but I'm like preserve for what like you're still gonna age you're still gonna die what what is the preservation for it's like yeah a doll that you keep in a collector box instead of like letting a kid take out and play with and then it just ends up in a landfill anyways and so I think it's kind of like beautiful how these guys just like [SPEAKER_02]: use and abuse their bodies and push them to the limits and instead of like treating them like porcelain themselves, they're just like, no, we're just going to see what it can take.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, yeah, they're going to get fucked off and like,
[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's something very alive about that and I think that's really beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: I have not heard anyone make that point before and I think it is really apt. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a very good observation. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like a big part of the appeal of Jackass is how alive and kinetic it feels. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I find it very inspiring to like [SPEAKER_02]: Use their bodies to that degree. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I actually think talking about jackass in the same conversation as minions makes a lot of sense, arguably more sense than Supergirl. [SPEAKER_01]: I agree as of that. [SPEAKER_01]: Because like,
[SPEAKER_01]: Minions. [SPEAKER_01]: Minions and jackass both have this feeling of we are so deep into the like IP franchise of it all that to be honest, it doesn't totally matter what the story is. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm hanging out with my friends for a while. [SPEAKER_01]: like in these are these are characters, even though in in minions and monsters, which we'll get too shortly, there's there's new characters, but they are essentially the same, you know, they have like slightly different interests, but the way the entire entity of minions operates gives you the same feelings no matter which characters we're focused on.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's funny, like, Jackass is that way too, but it's just happy with these characters. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't really care what they're doing. [SPEAKER_01]: I just would be happy to watch them do it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, I would earnestly say that if we had to choose the most iconic character creation to come out of like the 2000s thus far, I genuinely think the minions would be up there
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And perfect. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like how, how did they turn just a little yellow capsule, a yellow multivitamin and overalls into like this completely iconic beloved character that it's impact. [SPEAKER_02]: The minions impact cannot be overstated. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I do think that's kind of true. [SPEAKER_01]: I also, like, if I was thinking this morning as I was thinking about what to talk about today with the minions, because at first I was like, what is this going to be kind of a dumb conversation?
[SPEAKER_01]: We're just like listing things that were funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: just like which would also be okay, just like, you know, fine, but specifically I think what we started this podcast to try to stop doing. [SPEAKER_01]: But I was thinking about like the journey in popular culture that the minions have been on, because I don't know, like, [SPEAKER_01]: How old were you when Despicable Me came out? [SPEAKER_01]: You were probably in school, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was definitely too old. [SPEAKER_02]: Like I didn't see Despicable Me when it came out or anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember seeing the first theaters in falling asleep.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's sorry, apologies to Steve Carell and everyone else. [SPEAKER_02]: I think the first anything minions I saw was the first stand-alone minions move. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, interesting and I think that I might have seen as like kind of a joke, but then I was like, [SPEAKER_02]: Damn, this is, this is awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: That's, I love the minion. [SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly what I'm thinking. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, and I was wondering if maybe if you were so, but you were probably too old for cartoons, but too young to be open to cartoons in an adult way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was like, there's a few years in the middle there where it's like a point of defiance. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't watch baby stuff, but when the minions came out
[SPEAKER_01]: They were
[SPEAKER_01]: a derided they were like talked about like they were the dumbest thing in the world and it was so stupid I think I wrote like I kind of remember that I even looked up a buzzfeed I was I wrote down some weird questions about minions and I was like I wonder if any of these questions have been posed before and I came across this like 2015 buzzfeed thing that was like 100 questions. [SPEAKER_01]: I have for the minions and it was written from this shitty [SPEAKER_01]: millennial perspective right like that those years those peak buzz feed years where we were all assholes and it was like do you guys have dicks like what's going on like how like what are your genital situation that like keeps bringing it up every like ten questions but the attitude of it was so negative I really made me think about like man we used to minions [SPEAKER_01]: did something that I think the only other thing I've seen do this is Shrek, which is that it rode the wave of irony so well that it actually jumped over it and now everyone's like can't deny that these are just fun that these are like essentially clowns or like [SPEAKER_01]: you know, they remind me of silent film stars.
[SPEAKER_01]: The way they're like, just little physical comedy entities. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is amazing that they did that. [SPEAKER_02]: No, they, they are undeniable. [SPEAKER_02]: And they, the fact that they were even able to bypass, because do you remember the era of like, I think this was past most people being on Facebook, but like the era of like, minions, memes for like uncles on Facebook, where would just be like minions, and then it would just be like, if you, if I, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, wow, I can't I think of a single you're not exposed to much uncle culture.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's like you can't land. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, like if you mess with my family on a Monday, watch your ass. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And then it's just minions. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I was definitely aware of that. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think that's part of it was like, [SPEAKER_01]: I could be wrong. [SPEAKER_01]: I haven't researched what the wave was, but I think the wave was like, just flat out, making fun of these, these things are stupid to kind of like a last, take on like this is something for [SPEAKER_01]: low-class, like, gas station people, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: This is something. [SPEAKER_02]: I think for a minute, they became the new, like, tass. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: And then somehow it rode that wave. [SPEAKER_01]: I think the memes helped because the memes were so extreme that people started to develop [SPEAKER_01]: like an ironic attachment to them again and then it became kind of like funny and edgy to like them and then like as it as that grew I think that's how we all jumped back in because even I who like I don't really like [SPEAKER_01]: kids stuff that much.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like animation that much or like I have a hard time. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to say that I don't like because I think there's a lot of beautiful animation out there, but I have a hard time connecting to it. [SPEAKER_01]: Aha. [SPEAKER_01]: And the minions have made their way in for me. [SPEAKER_01]: in a way that like like I saw Toy Story and I was five and I was like yeah I know I saw this when I was a kid but I don't I like and this doesn't really connect with me yeah I think also I was listening to a couple of interviews with um uh uh what's the minion's guy name Jack Pierre
[SPEAKER_01]: Incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: Excuse me, P.E.C.E.C.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, listener, you're getting a really first hand experience of something that happens to me five times a day. [SPEAKER_01]: I've been to the neurologist. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I, I, I anyway. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I was listening to Pierre Coffand talk about the minions. [SPEAKER_01]: No, totally gone. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't know what I was going to say. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, oh, family movies. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what it was. [SPEAKER_01]: Family movies versus kids movies is what he said.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was like I would consider minions family movies their family friendly the kids can come They're not gonna see anything super offensive But I would actually put this with like plenty of adult animation as well like family guy or something where it's like There are jokes for the adults that are for the adults and that's fine, too Yeah, also I Also just I held I held my mug up to my minion and you didn't notice
[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, I was panicking about sounding stupid on microphone. [SPEAKER_02]: I gave him some tea.
[SPEAKER_02]: The minions movies may be the despicable me ones do. [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't seen enough of them to know, but the minions stand alone movies. [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like don't follow the typical formula of kids' movie, where it's like, there's not that sort of, there's not, there's not necessarily like any sort of moral or lesson or big tear jerk or vomit or you know, they're [SPEAKER_02]: They're okay with not being like super emotional or teaching a lesson. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think that, you know, it's fine to do that and but this just isn't Pixar.
[SPEAKER_02]: Sure. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, it's just different where it's just kind of like, no, it's like kind of just a comedy. [SPEAKER_02]: And there are some like sweet moments, but it's like, it's, it doesn't follow that same formula. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean the fact that's starting with the fact that the minions whole thing is like, they love evil guys. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's not like it's ever like, oh, and then they learn to not love evil guys. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, they're thing is loving evil guys and that they're like these uncomplicated creatures that are just that just exist, they're just driven by instinct and they just that's you can't kill them.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just exist and they do their thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's they they follow a path. [SPEAKER_01]: They're like ants. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: And they're just really funny. [SPEAKER_01]: They're just, I mean, they're clowns. [SPEAKER_01]: They're like, it really is. [SPEAKER_01]: It's very funny. [SPEAKER_01]: I never, I think I had this realization when I watched the First Minions movie, but it had fully left my mind by the time I was watching this. [SPEAKER_01]: I forget that these are kind of a French.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not kind of. [SPEAKER_01]: These are a French. [SPEAKER_01]: piece of media, essentially it's like made by French people. [SPEAKER_01]: And like it's kind of a very old stereotype that French people love like Jerry Lewis or something, but I do think there is something too. [SPEAKER_01]: The French sense of humor is very clown-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, nice to have like a really specific cultural identity in your comedy, but like, you know, I've been to Montreal and I'm ever seeing the French clowns and being like, alright, I got it. [SPEAKER_02]: But it's like, it's like somehow when you take that sensibility and put it on a tick tack. [SPEAKER_02]: It becomes the most charming, funny thing in the world. [SPEAKER_01]: Now here, here's the first of my Spiss minion specific questions that I just had while I was watching the movie, which is that they look really good to bite into, not a question, just a statement.
[SPEAKER_01]: They do look like that though. [SPEAKER_02]: But what they would, they sure do. [SPEAKER_01]: So Alex, my dear husband, thinks that they, that they would have a marshmallow texture. [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, I think they would be like starburst. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they'd be quite dense. [SPEAKER_02]: That's what I think is, well, I think it would, I was thinking hi to, which is very similar to Starburst in that, but also, I don't think you could break the skin. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, that's my thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's the thing. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I think you would bite in and it would be like biting into a sort of, like biting into a Starburst, but if you could never actually rip it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: So it would be more like biting into a bouncy ball. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like biting into like, [SPEAKER_02]: or a rubber duck. [SPEAKER_02]: It would be like biting a rubber duck. [UNKNOWN]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think so. [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm sure that I'm sure that these, there are AI generated videos that exist to people biting into minions because their texture does look nice.
[SPEAKER_02]: Certainly. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it looks, I think it has the same appeal of it's like, you know, how like nothing used to be better than like chewing
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't personally know. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was just like, it would almost be that thing where it's like not not cuteness aggression because not about cuteness, but we're like suddenly there's a sensation that feels so good that you're just like, yeah, like that's chewing on a live-strong bracelet and I feel like chewing on them would be similar. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I think so kind of like a big blob of silicone too, like yeah, yeah, okay, interesting.
[SPEAKER_01]: what else do you have any other questions you want to pose are we going to sprinkle those through I can sprinkle them I really only had I really only have one more because the another one got answered when I found an interview with Pierre Coffand and he said I wrote are they immortal and oh yeah he said yes good question [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so definitively, yes, they don't die and they don't reproduce. [SPEAKER_01]: They just are. [SPEAKER_01]: I think is his exact quote. [SPEAKER_02]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I love that about that. [SPEAKER_01]: I wrote down, is there a minion beauty standard? [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, and I don't really know the answer. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I Kind of think no. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they're very accepting of the one-eyed ones. [SPEAKER_01]: Those are the most different [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then some are so squat like one of them. [SPEAKER_02]: His overalls cover his mouth. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: Some are big. [SPEAKER_02]: Some are smaller.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I, they all have some variation of very similar hair. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think they think about that. [SPEAKER_02]: I love that. [SPEAKER_02]: But they do care about how they look because of the scene where they say no, no, no, no, you to the tuxedo. [SPEAKER_02]: And yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, to the overalls, which is funny because they were in golf, closed before they do, and they do wear a suit in the montage before that and after, but maybe not, you know, not for every day, yeah, they say not for every day.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have too much moving and scooting around to do. [SPEAKER_02]: So they do care how they look. [SPEAKER_02]: But I don't think that they're, I think that in terms of the minion beauty standard, they're like, we're just happy to look like minions. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love that. [SPEAKER_02]: But then we care about how we decorate our little minion bodies. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, okay, that makes sense. [SPEAKER_01]: No further questions.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, okay, I like that we started in ancient times. [SPEAKER_02]: I did like that. [SPEAKER_02]: That was with the stone goggles, which also shows that like, I guess I have a question, because we've we've never seen a minion without it's goggle, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I guess not.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think so. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm curious about the goggles. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, maybe their eyes can't interact with our atmosphere. [SPEAKER_01]: That's, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm open to that being the situation, but I'm like how, because yeah, I liked the stone goggles and then yeah, the whole the whole cyclops thing was just yeah, that was jackass. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I did hear Pierre Café. [SPEAKER_01]: He talked about the cyclops thing with something he just always wanted to do for the sitting on the Lego joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the other thing, but he put that in and thought, he was like, you know, I don't think of these as kids movies and I just think of them as funny and so I put in stuff that I think is funny and he's like, but I also just, I will go as extreme as I feel like with the comedy and I will let the producer rain me back in, which I think is the right way to do it. [SPEAKER_01]: But he thought he thought for sure that joke would get taken out. [SPEAKER_01]: He was like, surely they're going to take that out and they're going to take out the thing where they accidentally behead the king.
[SPEAKER_02]: That was great. [SPEAKER_01]: That got a big laugh in my room. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Because I mean, when they show, I think it was a queen, right? [SPEAKER_02]: I have no idea. [SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, we'll have to tell the gender when they're in the robes and stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: The cross section of the night again, it looks like a ham bone.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was so funny and I liked going through history and I also really liked that I thought it was a very well executed this Misdirect where you think you're in old West time Yeah, and then they have the cops come up in a car and you're like, wait, let's see I'm gone And then like [SPEAKER_02]: Just when they're this, I mean, I love how stupid they are. [SPEAKER_02]: I love that they just always fuck everything up. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm in support. [SPEAKER_02]: They're very good.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I love when they're a big group and they're like scaring someone and they just have no idea. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the actor who we think is a bad guy is just like terrified of them and running away as much as he can. [SPEAKER_01]: It's good. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And then, yeah, and then we enter the babble on a portion of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, so you did a sign, you assigned me Babylon before before I saw this and Alex and I sat down to watch Babylon and we were like 180 minutes. [SPEAKER_01]: What is this?
[SPEAKER_01]: And then like a few minutes into the movie, no, I think it was maybe like an hour and a half into the movie actually Alex turns to me and goes, wait, why do you have to watch this and I was like four minions and he was like, what?
[SPEAKER_01]: He couldn't believe, and I was like, yeah, I don't know, and then I got to be honest. [SPEAKER_01]: This would be a good double feature with Minions. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really, it smears quite well. [SPEAKER_02]: It really, really does. [SPEAKER_02]: It's that whole portion in the middle, where it's like, okay, they become suddenly huge stars. [SPEAKER_02]: then they're living like this like high-class Hollywood lifestyle and then sound comes into the picture and they can't hack it and then they like end up in like a flaw-power essentially.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's the same plot. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like some of the characters in Babylon. [SPEAKER_02]: That's really crazy. [SPEAKER_02]: The minions are Margot Robbie in Babylon. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's, I, they're blonde.
[SPEAKER_01]: I, I also just like, I really loved Babylon. [SPEAKER_01]: It was very, I love Babylon and I, I understand that I think it's quite divisive. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I'm coming to it three years late, so it's like, I'm like, what's everyone's problem? [SPEAKER_01]: This is good, but also you can tell it's like a, [SPEAKER_01]: First movie out of COVID, we got to save cinema. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, here's my manifesto about why it's important, but also cynical romanticism, that sort of floats throughout.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a more interesting Margot Robbie performance than Barbie by a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: I, a full agree. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, it's, [SPEAKER_01]: it's like an epic. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know, where it's like I love those movies that are sort of old fashion and the way that there's like huge rise and huge fall. [SPEAKER_02]: Nightmare Alley also has that, but I know I love Babylon. [SPEAKER_02]: I saw them theaters and instantly loved it. [SPEAKER_02]: Also, I mean, like, there's that one scene in the montage where it's like, they throw the party with, like, the elephants and stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was wondering, and maybe you don't know the answer to this, but I couldn't. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't quite have time to research it before this. [SPEAKER_01]: That is referencing Babylon or is that referencing, was there a real party that happened? [SPEAKER_01]: That was supposed to be. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't. [SPEAKER_01]: I have no idea. [SPEAKER_01]: What if I googled on camera? [SPEAKER_01]: Does everyone love when I do that? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, old Hollywood party elephants.
[SPEAKER_01]: Will that get me something?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, that doesn't get anything. [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, guys. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I maybe won't be able to figure this out. [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, true story behind Babylon. [SPEAKER_01]: Which, of course, there are 50 articles that say that. [SPEAKER_01]: Can I read fast enough? [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
[SPEAKER_02]: I also, like, to get ahead of one of the, I think, really annoying nitpicking complaints people have, is they're like, oh, it's like, in 1920s Hollywood, but there's references to, like, you know, every era of Hollywood, like, through the 50s. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, yeah, they just wanted to do, like, an old Hollywood minions, and they decided to do the 50s. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the 20s, because of the sound thing, but like, of course they want to get in as many, like, fun old Hollywood references as [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I sort of, I mean, I will say I did have one thought while watching the movie that I immediately let go of, but that I was like, why is there a suffragette here?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, would a hadn't women had the right to vote for like a while before this? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think that's, I think that happened like seven or eight years earlier.
[SPEAKER_01]: But but I immediately was like I think it like I think that something about these movies is that they are like Sort of unbothered by reality. [SPEAKER_01]: They they they're not even in the reality as us. [SPEAKER_01]: They're they're in a different one. [SPEAKER_01]: So right like Yes citizen can exist in the 1920s in this and the citizen can't be it was really funny where he couldn't that was so funny say Rosmas
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a need to see, like, who? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and all of the, all of the talkie bits were really funny that, like, when it's about when it, like, zooms in on Minionese, essentially, it's like very satisfying, because it is like, [SPEAKER_01]: Up until that point, I feel like in all the Mayans movies, no one acknowledges that they're talking any language. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, also in this movie, it's like, it's, yeah, it's just a mix of like every language ever, which then becomes like nonsense language.
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and the fact that like no one realized until their shootings sound that they speak this other language,
[SPEAKER_02]: It's such like a funny, you know, cartoon lot, which is great, where it's like, they're speaking minini's the whole time, and it's only when like, they're shooting, and then it's like, wait, what?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no one realized it was really enjoyable. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you enjoy dort, the alien? [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I really liked him. [SPEAKER_01]: I liked his weird movements and animation style. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I did. [SPEAKER_02]: I liked, I did think it was very funny that, um,
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, I'm whatever on the fact that at the end, he ended up being an actual, like, robot alien. [SPEAKER_02]: I believed him the whole time.
[SPEAKER_02]: See, I didn't, and I thought it was very funny that it was just a very, mentally unwell man that they were just. [SPEAKER_02]: follow up all the way around and I don't think they'd get that cruel in these movies. [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess it's good that then in the end he was actually like an alien rova, but I did think it was like very funny when they go to his apartment and stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I liked that a lot and I like I liked the reveal then his apartment was actually [SPEAKER_01]: the portal to the spaceship or whatever they saw that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was very funny too. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just thought the animation of the little flying saucers like I liked all of it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like 60s kind of like flying saucer monster movie. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was very like 50s, 60s. [SPEAKER_02]: And he was too. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, no, I did like Dord. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't realize he was voiced by Jesse Eisenberg. [SPEAKER_02]: I wish I had known that before, so I could have put the voice to the, you know, to the guy.
[SPEAKER_02]: His voice. [SPEAKER_02]: But I think that's a great. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, his voice sounded familiar to me, but also, um, he, I like, kept seeing videos of Jesse Eisenberg on the red carpet. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, what does he do in this movie? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember him at all. [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I mean, he also does seem like a guy who might just love the minions and be like around the pretzels or any of his kids doesn't mean I like I think anyone with kids like doing these movies Yeah, that's tray Parker.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know that he said that interviews to who's like I'm just excited to do something my daughter can watch [SPEAKER_01]: Which that's really funny. [SPEAKER_01]: It is funny how the little Kathulu guy just is Cartman. [SPEAKER_01]: I know. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know I had that crush on Cartman. [SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, hello. [SPEAKER_01]: I low-gumi. [SPEAKER_01]: I did not know that about you. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really?
[SPEAKER_02]: Damn, I feel like I talked about it a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: I have somehow it's never come up with, I'm also kind of anti-South Park, not like as a concept, but I just don't, I don't like looking at it or listening to it, so. [SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, classic got very into it in middle school and I had a crush on Cartman. [SPEAKER_02]: What can I say? [SPEAKER_01]: I think it came out for the first time when I was in middle school or something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember...
[SPEAKER_01]: being at the Del Mar fair, which is San Diego's like county fair. [SPEAKER_01]: And that year, the really big item, I don't know if this still happens at fairs because I don't know trans cycles, if trans cycles work the same way as they did in the night late nineties, but when it was a kid you'd go to the fair and every year there was like a new item that you could win, that you could buy, that was the thing everyone wanted,
[SPEAKER_01]: And this year, it was a felt cat in the hat hat. [SPEAKER_02]: I do remember seeing that in culture. [SPEAKER_01]: And I got the South Park felt cat in the hat hat. [SPEAKER_01]: Having never seen a single episode, I just was like, this show is cool to people. [SPEAKER_01]: So, all right, such a freaking loser. [SPEAKER_01]: This show is cool to people so I'll wear that. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't remember where I ever wore the hat, but it didn't get amazing feedback.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, was it like the cat in the hat with just like Cartman on it or something? [SPEAKER_02]: How was it a South Park blue rim felt cap blue rim? [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, okay, okay, okay rim not rim Blue rim white hat with a blue top at the top and then okay and then like [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what printing format, but almost had the feeling of like iron on like applique and things, the whole just like the cutout of the characters, this has South Park, like almost like the movie, the show poster.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Damn, I really love that you thought you were going to get a lot of wear out of this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I do feel like you left the hardest at these stories. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's like, but, or come across that I think are going to be cool. [SPEAKER_02]: You're sort of tutorial misadventures, which always seemed to be headwear. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think, yeah, I can't say.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well you can wear this with anything. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I've posted it on Instagram before, but I've seen the picture, but I had the same sort of phase with the teletubbies. [SPEAKER_01]: I would wear I had a beanie with a plastic thing with the teletubbies right here. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why is it always hidden where I think I look good in a hat?
[SPEAKER_02]: It's all it is. [SPEAKER_02]: So you're more prone to taking risks.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a classic picture, I'll send it to you. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a picture of me in my, my, let's have his baby at a computer of big like CRT monitor computer, logging on to America online.
[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty cool stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hmm, well, I would get a minions hat, so yeah, so don't, you know, you're kind of maybe you're anti headwear a little bit I look really bad in headwear, so that's so you're your questioning my choices I am a big head. [SPEAKER_02]: I am Mark safe from Rick, so I have a really small head, so I look really bad in it [SPEAKER_02]: Um, but we do have that picture of we, that picture of me a universal in the goggles, which I will include on the post. [SPEAKER_02]: Of course we have to. [SPEAKER_02]: I look, I look good in the goggles, the minions goggles.
[SPEAKER_02]: Remember that you actually kind of did, which is rude. [SPEAKER_02]: They suit me. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, so I quite literally was so in the old Hollywood minions of it all. [SPEAKER_02]: I like, [SPEAKER_02]: Genuinely forgot about the monster's aspect until that was Explicitly mentioned like I was just like so along for the ride of just like the minions Do in their thing and Hollywood that then win like [SPEAKER_02]: He does his little storyboard for like monsters. [SPEAKER_02]: He's moving.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, right. [SPEAKER_02]: This movie is technically called minions in monsters. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think maybe it's not criticism, but I sort of was hoping minions and monsters would be friends because they like evil. [SPEAKER_02]: I thought that they would be friends because I kept early on calling it minions versus monsters and then kept getting corrected. [SPEAKER_02]: And it was like, no, no, no, it's minions and monsters. [SPEAKER_02]: And so I thought that that meant, oh, they must be friends.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then also, who was correcting me? [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you are the person I would imagine being being the one correcting people on minions. [SPEAKER_02]: I just got corrected. [SPEAKER_02]: Based on the early marketing. [SPEAKER_02]: of there was like an AMC special soda, there was all this stuff with Irene and based on all the Irene marketing I was so convinced that Irene was gonna look crazy like this like Irene looked but be like uh
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, a friend, a friend of theirs, who has the voice of like, Joan Q. Sacker, something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, some beloved older actress. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And then it turned out that was not the case with Irene. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and Irene doesn't have a voice at all, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Just kind of a girl. [SPEAKER_02]: Irene really just is an entity. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's the blob, right? [SPEAKER_01]: This, the vibe.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Irene really liked the animation in this movie. [SPEAKER_02]: I really liked how everything moved. [SPEAKER_02]: I liked, I thought the textures were very good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did too. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I remember noticing on Irene that I liked how it really looked like gelo or something. [SPEAKER_01]: And I liked the textures on door. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought, [SPEAKER_01]: it looked realistically like metal or like some sort of material on his arms that was like metallic ish but would be flexible to be clothing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and I like the texture on the menu. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh well you know I want to take a big bite.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think, I mean, in general, I think these movies look really good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they do. [SPEAKER_01]: They're fun. [SPEAKER_01]: They're a fun time. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, once they got into, yeah, so they, they free-goomy. [SPEAKER_02]: And didn't know that was his name.
[SPEAKER_02]: He has some like a long name, and then he's like, that people call it be Goody. [SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, okay, Goody is friend. [SPEAKER_02]: Goody is friend because he's even little or than the minion. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: They can bunk him on top of his head. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and then we'll also actually, I liked how, because the minions are very one trackmind. [SPEAKER_02]: So I did like that this one introduced us to some minions who are free thinkers. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I also loved how they were little boyfriends. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was cute. [SPEAKER_02]: It was really cute. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I like that a lot. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, they had a little me cute and then they just like were in love. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a bromance, it's in the bromance genre of movie. [SPEAKER_02]: I think it is, but I think they might genuinely be a couple. [SPEAKER_02]: I think this might go past bromance. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we don't know if the minions can have romantic relationships, but, [SPEAKER_02]: You know, they slept in the same bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, see, my feeling is no. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they have, you don't think so? [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they would even have the interest or drive. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they like companionship. [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: But if they don't have, not to be Buzzfeed about it, but if they don't have genitals and they maybe don't have the like, evolutionary need to reproduce. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they don't even think about romance in that way. [SPEAKER_01]: They just, it's me, your companionship.
[SPEAKER_02]: who's to say, they were, if they maybe were a sexual little boyfriend, but they were, they were little boyfriends. [SPEAKER_02]: And I thought their relationship was very cute. [SPEAKER_02]: And then there's Ed, who's just kind of a third will, but he seems happy with that. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he just doesn't even know he can't hear, he doesn't know what's being said. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, they invented Minionese Sign Language, which was key, no. [SPEAKER_01]: It was key, it wrote it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, yeah, I liked all three of the main characters. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought they were like fun to watch together. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're different enough. [SPEAKER_01]: I could tell who was who. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and they gave them um, distinctive hair lines for early hair, the other main three minutes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, so I was like, yeah, that's James, because he has, he has a little bit of a curl.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so did the monster stuff in general? [SPEAKER_01]: Did you enjoy that part of it? [SPEAKER_01]: The movie? [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know.
[SPEAKER_02]: my less favorite bit because I truly could have just like watched them bumping around old Hollywood for 90 minutes. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: But I did think the monsters were fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, I liked the baby otter. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: That we saw for a moment in time. [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was very cute. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, and I liked that one monster's a little bikini top that kept falling down. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a really good bit to keep going.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: They just kept having to be like retired. [SPEAKER_02]: Even like someone else. [SPEAKER_02]: That's a very good physical bit. [SPEAKER_02]: I thought another good physical bit was the way that two of the minions were on the, [SPEAKER_01]: want the blue guy and they're just smooth sailing and then the other two are on the tentatively guy and it's just like yeah that was really funny the the tentacle guy I feel like had a lot of funny little physical things I also liked there's that one sequence once they get back to the studio and Henry I think is trying to run away from them and it goes into like a like a more simple
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like a Benny Hill or something where it's been totally, really was, no, that was fun. [SPEAKER_01]: I just, I think something that is like, that covers the whole conversation is like, how willing they are to like take kind of cookie swings. [SPEAKER_01]: in these movies, because I also, another thing I really liked was the credit spits, yes, very, very. [SPEAKER_01]: And that, like, in the end of the movie, when it's revealed that it's like, this was all a movie, yeah, and it says written by, [SPEAKER_02]: That was really, and then the starring, and it's just all the names, all of all the first name only names just in a room.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the other thing I really liked is when it was music by and the music is really crazy for the three seconds that name is on screen, and then it goes back to normal again.
[SPEAKER_01]: I really charming stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: I just think like, they're just so willing to be playful and the playfulness you can feel throughout up and down like all of the movie and it's, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Not that focused on being like an important lesson and some sort of morality experience. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, this is just silly and fun and it's an exercise in that being allowed.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're not supposed to be like a role model for children. [SPEAKER_02]: They're just this funny little entity that I love the group think at, like, yeah, they are like ants. [SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, when they're all just like together and it's like, [SPEAKER_02]: Good night. [SPEAKER_02]: Good night. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: There was something that wasn't good night, but it sounded like, you know, what, yeah, whatever menu needs good night. [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to remember, because I thought I found that part so funny.
[SPEAKER_02]: And in the citizen came part after the pool, when they just all are in screen, they're all in camera. [SPEAKER_01]: I also, in the opening of the movie, when they go back through the first like five or six things that were ever filmed, right, the horses and the dog and the animal and the train. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that it's like, that that exists. [SPEAKER_01]: That's just like, it exists as like a thesis statement for what the movie is about to do. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so annoying.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going, we're doing it. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going through the history.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were there. [SPEAKER_02]: It's, yeah, it's just like, [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, they're just, they're, they're a perfect thing to put into like any situation. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, I, I love any sort of old Hollywood stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I, I love Los Angeles. [SPEAKER_01]: So I love anything that's like a love letter to Hollywood. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, and I specifically love, I don't even know how to say this.
[SPEAKER_01]: I have had a love, a complicated love with Los Angeles being from there, but leaving, but then the thought process you have to go through to be okay with leaving leaves you a little bit spun out, I think, and like, [SPEAKER_01]: I had the same experience with New Orleans where, which I'm not going into a New Orleans rant, but what I love about Los Angeles is the fantasy of what it was, which is something I actually never experienced.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is what these types of movies let me live in again, and Babylon, same thing, even though Babylon is like, this was all fucked up and everyone was fucked up and dead. [SPEAKER_02]: But there's still such a romance too. [SPEAKER_01]: And like, or you must remember this, that podcast, like any of that stuff that lets me live in that for a little while, I think is like very, is almost like nicer than visiting. [SPEAKER_01]: you know what I mean like it's because it's living in something that was the fantasy of what I was in love with while I was there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so thank you to the minions for that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean I really loved the the little minute where it's like it shows how like James like really does have an affinity for them. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like he's just bouncing around like every department [SPEAKER_02]: He is really good. [SPEAKER_02]: He has a real knack for. [SPEAKER_01]: He's talented. [SPEAKER_01]: He's a talented minion. [SPEAKER_01]: I also think something. [SPEAKER_01]: It's also late. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, go for it. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we'll just then being immortal and then then having been alive for like thousands of years and then it's like he finally finds what he's meant to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he had to wait out history to get to that point. [SPEAKER_02]: You do wait for the world to catch up with him. [SPEAKER_01]: So let's tragic vampire story. [SPEAKER_01]: I was just thinking about how. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I certainly have gotten a little bit of feedback that's like, What do you mean you love the minions? [SPEAKER_01]: I thought you hated kids movies. [SPEAKER_01]: And we've covered that a little, but the other thing I wanted to say is that. [SPEAKER_01]: like I think minions make me think of you because of our time at universal studios.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have a real, we have a real history with the minion and so like my excitement, like my participation in the excitement about minions has like a lot to do with like it being a way to engage with my own friendship that I like right and like [SPEAKER_01]: that that's a part of it that it's like tied into these memories that were so fun. [SPEAKER_02]: The minions are like a bit of an avatar for like, yeah, something we did as friends, that was so fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, which was live close to the university of those and get an annual pass.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, and it was like truly such a fun year after work. [SPEAKER_01]: It would be 5 p.m. and we'd look up when universal clothes and be like, we have four hours. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's go. [SPEAKER_02]: And we would just sometimes go and like ride one ride and get dinner. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And it was like, [SPEAKER_02]: It was so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: It was so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I love it so much. [SPEAKER_01]: I also, I did learn that the minions ride, yeah, was written by Pierre and Brian Lynch, the guy who wrote, who wrote to speak of me.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he participates obviously and all these other memories. [SPEAKER_01]: OK. [SPEAKER_01]: But it was the first thing that universal let him write, that they let Pierre write.
[SPEAKER_01]: All of the millions of movies, and he hasn't been allowed to write all of them, but he, he, the, the ride was like the first time he got to do like a writing collaboration with Brian Lynch and make, and make story, okay, and so, you know, that's cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that it's reflected and how fun the ride is. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so fun. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's hard to make those just sitting in place for D screen rides, but that one is a good one, that one's a great one. [SPEAKER_02]: And then they have that, like, the line you go into, like, the room before and and grew in the dark.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it smells like bananas, which I thought that this movie, they really, you know, they were like, we can only use the banana thing, like, one time. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think they used it great. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that they, [SPEAKER_02]: I think that they used it well. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll likely get replaced banana. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll likely get replaced banana.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, in our last few minutes, is there anything else you want to say about minionists? [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I got this at university. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: On the last day of our past, all year I had said, on the last day, I'm going to get a minion zipper. [SPEAKER_02]: And I had been planning on getting a different minion separer, the one with two eyes, and he was like sitting down, so his little feet were outstretched. [SPEAKER_02]: But then last minute, I said, no, I said, no, I said no, this one, I must get it.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I carried him around like a baby all day. [SPEAKER_01]: And in fact, in the photo, we have with a minion, I feel like you are. [SPEAKER_01]: Or no, there is just a standalone photo of you carrying it. [SPEAKER_02]: Look at me holding him, I'm like, I'm in it.
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, no, I feel like we have multiple stories that took place on the minions line. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And no, it's just, yeah, the minions. [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like I fell in love with the minions at universal. [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely, me too, because I think I had never even seen the minions movey, I think, before. [SPEAKER_02]: I think I saw the minions movey after falling in love with them. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, at universal. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I don't know, they're just such perfect little guys, they are, they are such, such charming little guys, and we did get confirmed no genitals on this movie because you do see a naked minion.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, that's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I left you a little bit of an achy. [SPEAKER_02]: I was kind of like, uh, an achy minion. [SPEAKER_01]: I also left really hard at naked grew in the credits. [SPEAKER_02]: That I mean, look, I have dated so many men with that body.
[SPEAKER_02]: that I was like, it was a little triggered if I make it real. [SPEAKER_01]: That's really funny. [SPEAKER_02]: Just the beer gut on the skinniest legs, no ass. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, it's a Hank Hill build for sure. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, I am.
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, but no, I loved, I thought it was also so cute that James wanted to get an Oscar. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, got one in the end. [SPEAKER_02]: He got one. [SPEAKER_02]: And, well, I think, see, that was a real moment where I was like, okay, I think they're like an actual couple, because I think that he thought that Henry was about to propose.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was what I was reading into that, that's what I got, but then it was like, no, here's your banana Oscar, and he was just as happy with that, then he would have been with that. [SPEAKER_02]: He was, which shows where his priorities live, but, you know, he's a career-miliable. [SPEAKER_02]: He's relatable. [SPEAKER_02]: He's married to his art exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, after that. [SPEAKER_01]: What industry would you like to see the minions take on next? [SPEAKER_01]: Is it podcasting? [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh.
[SPEAKER_02]: The first all minion use podcasts. [SPEAKER_02]: Gosh, that's a good question. [SPEAKER_02]: Where would I like to see them next? [SPEAKER_02]: I maybe like, um...
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to think of a genre of movie I like.
[SPEAKER_02]: But it's like they covered so many. [SPEAKER_02]: Like they had minions in a rom-con in this movie, which was very funny when they're with Dort and his lady friend, his suffragette lady friend, and it's the dates and then it just pans over to the minions on the date.
[SPEAKER_02]: Not a war movie, even though that was very funny when they put the helmets on. [SPEAKER_02]: I did like that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Banging and doing each other, that was very good. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a, like, I know they were, the, they were calling the monster as Kaiju because that's monster in Japanese, I think. [SPEAKER_01]: or that's a specific type. [SPEAKER_01]: Actually, I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I take that back. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not positive, but I know the Godzilla movies are called Kaji movies, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So one of those types of movies, I think, could work. [SPEAKER_02]: I would like to see the minions in a haunted house. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that'd be a good one. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that would be fun. [SPEAKER_02]: Minions and ghosts. [SPEAKER_02]: Because the whole thing with minions is like they're not really like scared of things because they like the evil guys. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Like the the mummy thing was funny. [SPEAKER_02]: That was cute. [SPEAKER_02]: I would like to see the minions in some sort of haunted situation.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that would be really good. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, are you listening Pierre? [SPEAKER_01]: My cousin, my cousin Pierre? [SPEAKER_02]: We got to find out if you have some relation to see it. [SPEAKER_02]: If you're a minion's nepoe baby. [SPEAKER_01]: I doubt it because that name doesn't come from the French side of my family. [SPEAKER_01]: So, I think this is just pure coincidence. [SPEAKER_01]: I just do think it's funny. [SPEAKER_01]: It is funny. [SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, it is, it isn't always has been funny that, like, the minions guys last name is, like, coffee.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm my mom's somewhere. [SPEAKER_01]: I was listening to this triggered, because I think people made fun of her a lot for that last name, as a kid. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, but I think it's, I think it's funny in a cool way. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's funny in a really cool way. [SPEAKER_01]: My last note is actually for Babylon, which is that it was really good.
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're listening right now, put Damian Shazel on the phone.
[SPEAKER_01]: Three hours was crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't do that again. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't do that again. [SPEAKER_01]: Three hours was insane. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a single thing I would have wanted them to cut in that movie. [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: I, my favorite sequence in Babylon was, [SPEAKER_01]: when the the talkies, the like physical comedy talkies have started, Margo Robbie, where they're trying to record that like her doing like three lines in a comedy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if they just keep having to do it over and over and it keeps isolating, that was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. [SPEAKER_01]: And it almost that, [SPEAKER_01]: The way Babylon was structured to me, I actually thought was really interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: I wondered if it was conceptualized as a TV show. [SPEAKER_01]: At first, which wouldn't make sense for a movie about how important movies are. [SPEAKER_02]: But, or for Jamie and Michelle, the guest go on. [SPEAKER_01]: But, just the way it was structured, where it was almost like, it reminded me of like twilight zone or something but about something incredibly specific as opposed to just general, like where it was like these anthology, like vignettes.
[SPEAKER_01]: with the same recurring characters, but like, just vignettes into how they're experiencing stuff as time goes on. [SPEAKER_01]: Because the vignettes would take like a half hour, like, I get, well, how it ended up so long. [SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if people would have been kinder to Babylon if it had been like a miniseries on HBO or something. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't, yeah, maybe. [SPEAKER_01]: I think probably. [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I just love it. [SPEAKER_02]: I just love like I love those movies where by the time you get to the end You're like damn we've we've been through such a rise and fall like there's something so sort of old fashion about yeah But like I love it like it really gets me like when she just like I'm so glad that the minions like did not follow Margot Robbie's exact [SPEAKER_02]: trajectory that would have been really sad if they like died of a drug overdose and like a flop house.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, that would have been so sad. [SPEAKER_02]: Think of it, they're immortal though. [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm glad they didn't get addicted to drugs at all because can you what? [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, can you imagine minions on drugs? [SPEAKER_01]: No, they're already, they have so much energy already. [SPEAKER_02]: They're already so crazy cook. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we do nothing. [SPEAKER_01]: Like maybe they don't have a vascular system. [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean? [SPEAKER_01]: That's a good point because they don't bleed so they probably don't have a vascular system actually.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and we know they're squishy because of when, uh, uh, also I like that there's one that everyone hates, um, but when Dick actually hits the, the squat one with a mallet with the pipe. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, that he just fully does this and he goes like, okay. [SPEAKER_02]: And then he's like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And then he just pops right back up. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So there you go. [SPEAKER_01]: They they they they can't get addicted to drugs.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no bloodstream for that to enter. [SPEAKER_02]: I do think that probably I read did kill a lot of people. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's not in my business. [SPEAKER_02]: But that's not. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't care if they're not my minions. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't care. [SPEAKER_02]: I like the visual gag of the wizard tape putting pulling up his beard into his lots of good visual gags. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah guys, movie looked great. [SPEAKER_01]: I see the minions. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so fun.
[SPEAKER_02]: Go see the minions. [SPEAKER_02]: Go see minions and monsters. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just a really good time. [SPEAKER_01]: It's it is. [SPEAKER_02]: And I want them to make minions movies forever and ever and ever. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm confident they will because I think they always print money. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when, um, I, [SPEAKER_02]: in front of the theater before seeing it. [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, my friend, Dress is a minion. [SPEAKER_02]: Matthew, he demanded to be named in an episode because sometimes I reference him, namelessly.
[SPEAKER_02]: But then there were also some other people dressed as minions. [SPEAKER_02]: And then also there were like some kids coming out of the theater, speaking minions with little minion toys. [SPEAKER_02]: Love that, love that, and I was like, damn, minion fever, [SPEAKER_02]: Just can't stop sweeping the nation. [SPEAKER_01]: Are there any applause breaks in your screening? [SPEAKER_01]: No four times in mind a wrap eruptant. [SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember what they were?
[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely the end of the fight with Irene. [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember with that. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and when grew came on screen, that was one of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were like, how do you deal? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, as people love grew, I think like, if it was like, there were a lot of like teens in our screening that like would have been kids when just pickable me came out. [SPEAKER_01]: So they have like matured with the sensibility of the minions. [SPEAKER_01]: the way I did with Shrek, I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember the other moments, but I do remember that they weren't necessarily triumphant moments. [SPEAKER_01]: They were like funny moments. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, if it was a particularly good joke, our theater was like erupting into applause. [SPEAKER_02]: Like people couldn't help them. [SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if one of them was the citizen can joke, because I feel like that got a huge reaction. [SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't, and that's because you're in LA.
[SPEAKER_01]: The teenagers, it's spooky Illinois, aren't bold over by a citizen game reference.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, not too many theater nerds there. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, well, I feel that we did it. [SPEAKER_02]: I, I think we did. [SPEAKER_02]: I wish I looked up the minion word for goodbye, but I didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: So, good bye. [SPEAKER_01]: Goodbye.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that was it. [SPEAKER_01]: We did it. [SPEAKER_01]: We talked about the minions and also Jackass and Babylon a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so thank you so much for listening.
