[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, hello, we're here. [SPEAKER_01]: We're here, you're invited to hear us talk about the invite to tell her. [SPEAKER_02]: Hello, opening. [SPEAKER_02]: That was not really good. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're quite the broadcaster.

[SPEAKER_02]: So yes, we're covering the invite today, but you know, let's do other movie corner for a second. [SPEAKER_02]: And just, would you do see anything else this weekend? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just, I think real quick, I saw Evil Dead burn and that it's getting a lot of hate this movie. [SPEAKER_01]: People do not like it. [SPEAKER_01]: I like it. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it wasn't so bad. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was kind of like a little, a little flat and definitely like too long for what it was.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it was quite repetitive, but there were some very good little moments of body horror. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, creative bodywork, things I haven't seen before, and I was like, that's good, that's a good idea. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: And, like, what was one creative one? [SPEAKER_01]: So, like, pretty early on, like, this guy gets like, boiled alive in a lake. [SPEAKER_01]: And then when he like drags himself to the shore, um, the dead. [SPEAKER_01]: I like steps over him and steps like on his hand and the skin just sort of like glutes off.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, like falls off like a tender piece of meat. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, like. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, oh, yeah, that's gross. [SPEAKER_01]: And I haven't seen that before. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's

[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that

[SPEAKER_01]: It was very anti-boy mom, which I can always get on board with. [SPEAKER_02]: That's funny. [SPEAKER_01]: Ultimately, Evil Deadburn is a movie about the dangers of boy moms. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but honestly, I was like, the other movie everyone is shitting on because it just went on streaming is a Lee Cronin's The Mummy, all right, which I also liked. [SPEAKER_01]: I loved The Mummy. [SPEAKER_01]: like I liked it way more than this, and I, like this when I was like, it's okay, but I don't really like the early evil dead movies that much, like the original ones.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I've only, I think I saw one of them, and it was really, like,

[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of 70s, 80s horror kind of tough for me personally. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, yeah, I you know what, I find I have a little bit of trouble with like 80s storytelling in general. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like I respect that it was like the genre was like on the newer side and it's like that this is what led to what we have now, but I I find it a bit tough in terms of like, [SPEAKER_01]: story and, you know, doesn't my interest for a full 90 minutes. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I'm feeling very, like, Lee Kronen's the mummy got behind me.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now that everyone is seeing it on streaming and talking shit about it, and I'm like, [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my baby it's good. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, it's good that someone liked it. [SPEAKER_01]: And I mentioned that because that is basically It's very much like a non official sort of evil dead movie and a lot of people actually think that it was supposed to be like [SPEAKER_01]: evil dead mummy basically but because like there was already an evil dead coming out they couldn't and I think that people would like it more if that had been the case because it makes a lot of sense as an evil dead movie but it's just like a standalone people being confused by the title type thing yeah anyways that's funny i didn't know that about about the mummy that it was like evil dead [SPEAKER_01]: by, yeah, very, very much so, um, funny.

[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so we've all did burden was like, I don't think it's as bad as everyone's saying, but it's not great. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, well, listen, on the topic of 80s and 70s storytelling, I saw the rows of Nevada this week, which was of extremely 70s feeling really. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, what about it? [SPEAKER_02]: So, it, I mean, I first of all, I loved it. [SPEAKER_02]: The wrote note note was very cool, very weird. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I think you would like it, but it is.

[SPEAKER_02]: it's pretty weird. [SPEAKER_02]: The way it was shot was on, I don't remember, I forgive me any technical people listening, but it was on, because I don't know the name of this, but it was like on a camera that you had to crank. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, then it would only film for 27 seconds maximum. [SPEAKER_02]: So no shot was longer than that. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god. [SPEAKER_02]: And they didn't capture sound, so everything is ADRed later.

[SPEAKER_02]: I did. [SPEAKER_01]: That is one of the only things I saw about it. [SPEAKER_01]: And in theory, I'm not sure how I feel about that. [SPEAKER_01]: How does that translate? [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't notice that. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't realize it. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I was watching it. [SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's good. [SPEAKER_02]: And they're on a boat. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like fishermen on a boat. [SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, the sound is kind of like splashy. [SPEAKER_02]: But the sound she's generally sort of wet and there's not a ton it's you know it's like stoic fishermen having an experience and it is it's like time travel right yeah I would say I don't know if this is a spoiler or not but it's a time travel movie and it's it's not like an adventure it's like a you know it's like one of these [SPEAKER_02]: I can literally fiction books to you.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm always reading where it's like a meditation on. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's very similar to it's probably up here somewhere. [SPEAKER_02]: The meditation on the calculation of volume. [SPEAKER_02]: That book I was reading, where it was like a lady living a grown-hung day. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: It was that. [SPEAKER_02]: That. [SPEAKER_02]: Tone of time travel where it's like something fucked up is happening. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but but this is not an adventure where we figure out what It's just sort of okay a meditation on relationships and It was very beautiful and it's it's like calum turner and someone else, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know that other guy. [SPEAKER_02]: And so I didn't catch his name, but he was great. [SPEAKER_02]: We weren't introduced properly. [SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, I like that. [SPEAKER_02]: So it's like about a fishing village in like whales, I think. [SPEAKER_02]: somewhere, somewhere out. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm apologies to all of the UK, but I'm not great with your geography. [SPEAKER_02]: One of your lovely fishing villages, and it was like a sort of a story about like the backdrop of it was happening in [SPEAKER_02]: Like with the time jump, it was happening with like a dying industry town, so like Detroit or something or like any of these like rust belt cities and they end up they're in the future they're in their past.

[SPEAKER_02]: both. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, both ball, it's a mix. [SPEAKER_02]: And that, and it's the aspect ratio is square. [SPEAKER_02]: Also, I had never been to this theater, like this screen at this movie theater, because we went to see it at the music box, which is like, you know, the cool, like, [SPEAKER_02]: theater in in Chicago that shows like lots of old stuff, lots of like weird indie stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: But I'd never been in this room. [SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, oh, is this screen screen?

[SPEAKER_02]: And then I saw Ocean's 11 in that same room today. [SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, oh, no, that was.

[SPEAKER_02]: Less than learned. [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, that's our other movie corner. [SPEAKER_02]: We saw some other. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, also at Oceans 11, perfect movie. [SPEAKER_02]: No notes 10 out of 10 every time I hadn't seen it in a theater since it came out and It was a sold-out crowd for a movie fast this weekend at that theater and it is just so fun. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so funny.

[SPEAKER_02]: I saw my other favorite movie, The Fall, at Movie Fest last year, so it was really programming for me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah! [SPEAKER_01]: You got to find whoever's program in Movie Fest, because I think you would get along. [SPEAKER_01]: It'd be my new friend. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, really good. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be there with another movie corner, though. [SPEAKER_01]: That, oh, I, I had another really good transition. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry, do it. [SPEAKER_02]: I have like another really good transition, I'm so sorry.

[SPEAKER_01]: Speaking of 10 out of 10 movies, no, no, it's. [SPEAKER_02]: The impact was really the invite is I think my number two movie of the year. [SPEAKER_02]: Wait, what was the first one? [SPEAKER_02]: Nirvana the band the show the other way. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Of course. [SPEAKER_02]: The project Hail Mary goes after the invite, I think. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what I'm talking about. [SPEAKER_01]: Wow, and you loved project Hail Mary. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I loved the invite.

[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, it's my two, it's hitting my two, like between those two movies, it's hitting my two favorite things, which is like big, big space adventure, or if people talking in two rooms maximum. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, this one is like so people talking in rooms, but like, done so interestingly. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, really intently, genuinely, brilliantly. [SPEAKER_02]: And this was my second time seeing the movie, because I saw it a couple months ago at another festival in this movie Fest, not movie Fest.

[SPEAKER_02]: Not movie Fest, they, they're July Fest. [SPEAKER_02]: We're like, movie Fest, but um, so I was your theater pact. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it was totally fall and was that fun like where people like really like it was I would say there were a couple lines I actually like missed because people were like laughing and it just happened to me with the dialogue Yeah, that's why I was so happy to I was like I'd love to see it again because I could miss a bunch of snow I like I know I did because like there were a couple times where people were laughing and I was like, oh What was that?

[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'm so thrilled, you know, I have to admit I was like a little nervous going into this recording because I didn't know if you liked it or not and I kind of couldn't guess if you were gonna like it like it was when I really had no guess about because it's about it like I can tell that I like it because it's about [SPEAKER_02]: this I'm in the same time of life as these characters and I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I guess I just thought like I don't know if these conversations would seem stupid to someone who like just isn't in these conversations yet or like isn't having this experience.

[SPEAKER_02]: Now I am not having the experience of

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, no, I'm not in that time of life yet, but it's something that does feel so relatable as something that could happen. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel yeah, there's something sort of scary about it because it does seem so like just rooted in reality and [SPEAKER_01]: It's even though I would not, like, yeah, I'm not like 40 and married, like, they are. [SPEAKER_01]: I...

[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of those things where it's like that's totally one of the ways that I think, you know, I'm 31 that it's like, yeah, I'm old enough to be scared of that happening and like, you know, like the thing that was really, it's funny that my second viewing of the movie, I felt a lot sadder about it and I'm the ending hit me differently, hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: But the thing that I was thinking about when I was watching at the second time, the first time, I was simply laughing every second, I was so funny.

[SPEAKER_02]: But the second time I was thinking about like, you know, this is not my experience of what marriage is like, but I am friends with couples that are mean to each other like this. [SPEAKER_02]: And it just made me tremendously sad. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that's one of the things that it does so well is like, I was amazed at how many turns it took in tone. [SPEAKER_01]: And it all just, they all worked so well and felt very seamless. [SPEAKER_01]: But... [SPEAKER_01]: it's like it really does like it's like a ride through.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it's like it's so funny when it's funny but then like yeah the end it does it does get very sad and then the end you are like it's kind of like gutting a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah because it's like [SPEAKER_02]: It's just I think there's like an inherent heartbreak with the passage of time and like I think something that they they did really, really beautifully is that no one was. [SPEAKER_02]: wrong. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Like or no one wasn't right. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's like both of us are equally true.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so like when you're watching it, you know, in that first scene and they're like arguing and arguing and it's getting like in more and more intense as the other couple's going to come over, you're like damn these people are so mean to each other. [SPEAKER_02]: But there are moments [SPEAKER_02]: a little bit later, where it's like, they're funny together. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: We were like, you do kind of like them together and you can see I think that's why it's so sad is because it's like,

[SPEAKER_01]: And all of the characters that are supposed to feel very lived in, I mean, like maybe peanut not so much because she's supposed to be kind of mysterious and everything, but like Seth Rogan and Olivia Wilde, like those that relationship feels so lived in. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're like, you absolutely can see why they liked each other, what other people would like about them.

[SPEAKER_01]: How good they were together and that's why it's so sad that they're not anymore because it's like when there's a movie But a marriage where it's like, oh, the guys a fucking shit head asshole and it's like it's not it's just Uncomplicated good when they are like getting a divorce, you know, it's like good good for you girl Like yeah, this is so fucked up situation, but when it's like [SPEAKER_01]: when they clearly have the relationship that is like the exact type of relationship that everybody looks for hopes for wants and it really is the ideal type of relationship where she's like they had great sex they were each others best friends like they had so much fun together and then it still devolves like that's so [SPEAKER_01]: That's, you know, very existential crisis vibes where you're like, oh, there's no winning, like, oh, no, like, you're just going to get sick of each other.

[SPEAKER_01]: And like, the things you liked about each other are going to start just bothering you. [SPEAKER_01]: Like Seth Rogan, you can see how like, [SPEAKER_01]: He's funny. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like all these things that are likeable, but you can see how like after 20 years. [SPEAKER_01]: It's, she is sick of that side of him and he's sick of certain things with her and it's just like, what's the solution? [SPEAKER_01]: Like there isn't one. [SPEAKER_02]: And that, like, the journey that took them to the place that we're meeting them in now, like when you get bits and pieces of the story, it's like, you guys are miserable and it's your fault.

[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you, you guys are making a series of choices where you're just assuming you have to be stuck, doing what you're doing, and, like, I think a part of it is like, [SPEAKER_02]: a co-dependence, like a beautiful relationship that like mutated into like an ugly dependence that like they weren't experiencing pleasure in, but then they just kept going because they had a kid or whatever they felt like they had to and they didn't like it just is hard I think when people get in these patterns [SPEAKER_02]: It's really hard to notice that you followed a path to misery and now you're treating everyone in your life with like total contempt.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and and you just think, oh, everybody's miserable and it's like,

[SPEAKER_02]: And it's it's interesting to watch that experience of like how confronting it is to see a couple like then a couple comes into your space who's like fine and happy and like having fun in the perfect they snap at each other to a little bit but it's like. [SPEAKER_02]: It's still even the snapping ends with kindness and immediate accountability and apology. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then even with them it is it is such sort of like a twist when you learn that they've only been together a year.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, like you expect it's going to be this like older couple who like has some secret or what Yeah, to longevity and it's like, no, probably the reason they get along so well is because they're literally a new couple Yeah, yeah, I'm so broken and Olivia Wilde. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure got along, you know, for a lot longer than a year, but you know, and [SPEAKER_02]: it's just interesting that like yeah you expected to be one thing and then it's like no they're they're older but they're they're in like a brand new like Honeymoon phase relationship and that she that um peanut Penelope Cruz's character says like I was married I took like people forget that they don't have to live the way that they're living like and so that she has essentially experienced the journey that Olivia Wilde's character Angela is like on [SPEAKER_01]: And it's so relatable that, like, yeah, for two people to just be like, well, this, this just is our life.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, what are you going to do? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, jump out of your own life? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, no, that seems like impossible. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, especially when there's not like an event. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I feel like sometimes couples like that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, secretly, someone almost like wishes that the other person would like cheat or something or give them like a reason. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's like if neither of you does anything that gives like a reason, then it's just like you just keep like going along like day by day.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I just, you know, I think about this a lot because we have so many, I mean, just feel like when you're married you're like supposed to develop couple friends. [SPEAKER_02]: So we have so many couple friends. [SPEAKER_02]: Lots of different types and, you know, this is not any one specific person, but like there are just these moments where we do hear these friends of ours speak to each other with a lot of contempt and they're doing it in front of us and they're probably doing it in front of anybody and they don't see that that's [SPEAKER_02]: not healthy right and that and that like and it's just like I don't know it's just like almost very confronting to watch this and then feel kind of sad and I don't well like I feel like I'm scared it's such a funny needle I'm threading here because I'm I simply will never talk shit about my husband like I don't have any shit to talk first of all but also like

[SPEAKER_02]: Like these are the people I'm talking about like they are that the people who do that are the ones that I'm like That's crazy like I can't even fathom saying that but I'm not trying to paint like I'm not the picture of perfection But and I guess that caveat just felt important because I'm sort of seeing that I'm so much happier Then a lot of people I know [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm sorry, I'm sorry to those people if you were listening to this, it's not you.

[SPEAKER_02]: Anyone who listens to my podcast is good.

[SPEAKER_02]: But no, but it is like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just, it doesn't, I, I find I think about it a lot. [SPEAKER_02]: The people that do that stuff in front of me with their partner or talk shit about their partner. [SPEAKER_02]: I, I'm just like, I'm not sure that's the way. [SPEAKER_02]: Right, and it's like the path to a nice life. [SPEAKER_01]: Why do you start doing it? [SPEAKER_01]: Once you start just being really mean to each other and front of people that does show a certain comfort with being mean to each other, where it's like, oh shit, you don't even like realize, like this is so normal for how you interact.

[SPEAKER_01]: But it's like, you don't even really realize that this is awkward for other people because this is like the only way you interact with each other. [SPEAKER_02]: Which gets called out a couple of times in the movie, my favorite of which is when deep deep in the movie, when they're separated and hooking up and she calls herself a stupid fucking kind. [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, oh my god, like, and I've had moments like that right make a joke like at my own expense and someone reacts horrified and I'm like, [SPEAKER_02]: You're not supposed to talk about yourself that way.

[SPEAKER_02]: You're right, and I'm wrong, but it's very funny that she's like, no, it's fine. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just my inner monologue. [SPEAKER_02]: It's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that also shows how much it's like, their resentment of each other comes from like unhappiness, like with themselves. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And they're like what they've become in life.

[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's a...

[SPEAKER_01]: It's just it's amazing how it's just all talking like it all is just dependent on the dialogue and it's all good like all of the dialogue is so good and the way it's shot is like

[SPEAKER_01]: with it, with just people talking in a space. [SPEAKER_01]: Like sometimes the goal is to make it feel like claustrophobic and whatever, like a play. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's like this was just in one apartment, a beautiful apartment, and it's, I didn't think it felt claustrophobic at all. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it all felt very like kinetic to me, the way that the camera moved around and everyone moved around. [SPEAKER_02]: And also, some of those camera movements felt like felt, it really, it captured like that you are there, that you are there and that you are a participant.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm wondering, I'm wondering if part of it is that Olivia Wilde is acting in the scenes. [SPEAKER_02]: And so, if you're a director and you're also acting

[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm wondering if it, like, [SPEAKER_02]: if that altered some of the choices because she's able to see choices that the other actors are making or like how people look from a different perspective, the director would usually see. [SPEAKER_02]: And it like it really did give this like I'm there. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm having some conversations type of like feeling where you just, yeah, you felt like you're in the room and you're on the floor with them, you're in the kitchen. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think she's such a talented.

[SPEAKER_01]: director like I really liked book smart I like book smart a lot I never saw it don't worry darling but I don't see I don't credit I don't I didn't want to hold anyone accountable to anything they made during covid I also think it's almost like there was so much drama around don't worry darling and I feel like now that this movie's good people have been kind of like shitting on Florence Pue for like

[SPEAKER_01]: Look, the fact that Don't worry Darling was as bad as it is, actually to me supports the idea that Olivia Wilde was otherwise occupied and wasn't really directing the movie. [SPEAKER_01]: She was supposed to be direct here, funny. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I think she's a very talented director, but it's like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I believe that something not great happened on that set, but it's like, I think book smart and this. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like she's clearly very talented.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and has such a really good, like, artistic flare and vision, and I mean, the don't worry, darling stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even see the movie because I just wasn't one. [SPEAKER_02]: She is not a way back up. [SPEAKER_02]: Olivia Wilde, not someone I was ever tracking, really, until she made a report. [SPEAKER_02]: So, like, people seem to already have opinions about her by the time books mark came out, and then with don't worry, darling, [SPEAKER_02]: That was all a mess and it's not like I didn't watch it happen and maybe think thoughts I certainly never made content content about it But like you know as like oh, it's weird, but like her personal life [SPEAKER_02]: I just don't think, like, I just don't think it's that interesting.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I also don't think that Florence Pugh could have done anything that differently because to be honest, it was wildfire to a degree that I don't think anyone could control. [SPEAKER_01]: And also, I'm like, maybe Florence Pue does hate Olivia Wilde. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe she has a good reason. [SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't mean I don't think Olivia Wilde is a talent to director. [SPEAKER_01]: And it doesn't mean I'm like, fuck Florence Pue. [SPEAKER_01]: She's like, ma'am, that movie was very complicated.

[SPEAKER_01]: Something happened there. [SPEAKER_01]: But like, yeah, I think she's, she's good. [SPEAKER_01]: She's like, someone where I'm like, okay, damn, like, as a director, like, [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really intrigued by any movie she does, I think. [SPEAKER_02]: And also her performance, I mean, I will say her performance in this was really so good in it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, she is so good in it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so do you know anything about the production of how they made the movie? [SPEAKER_02]: No.

[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so I know that they, this is a play. [SPEAKER_01]: This is a, I saw that that it was, yeah, a play and then the guy who wrote the play, then there was a movie made in Spain, [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's, I think, seven movies in like seven crazy languages, but but so and then Rashida Jones and her writing partner Will McCormick wrote the this script and then essentially what they did was that it was like Rashida and Will and then the four actors and they went into like a

[SPEAKER_02]: rehearsal workshop where they like go through the script a bit by bit and talk through all of their like why don't know if he would I don't know if they would do that and I don't know or what does that mean and they like talked about [SPEAKER_02]: they talked a lot about their personal relationships and like they talked about how there was one interview that Seth Rogan did where he was like this was an incredibly revealing process because essentially in the rehearsal process you had to reveal [SPEAKER_02]: what you think the right amount of sex and married couples should be having every week.

[SPEAKER_02]: And then that tells a lot about your relationship and then like what you're bringing to this like becomes revealing to like what you think a healthy relationship like it's just like they all had to get really close really fast. [SPEAKER_02]: But [SPEAKER_02]: I think that process, like, doing two weeks of rehearsal, which, like, movies almost never do, um, it, like, dusted off any cobwebs of, like, overwritten stuff that could have been there, and made these characters feel really lived in.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so, like, stuff that came from that was, like, Edward Norton's big speech toward the end of the movie about, like, his backstory. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: He didn't tell anybody what it was going to be and he improvised it, but he like had it, he had it like the bones of it kind of written. [SPEAKER_02]: And so it was like a surprise on set. [SPEAKER_02]: Wow. [SPEAKER_02]: And I found his backstory really moving. [SPEAKER_02]: And like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: His character, I love so much.

[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just character so much. [SPEAKER_02]: But the other thing about the

[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: A stare perl is this like really famous relationship therapist, couples therapist. [SPEAKER_02]: She has, she sees a lot of celebrities, Olivia Wilde has said she was her therapist for a while. [SPEAKER_02]: But a stare, and she's written a lot of books. [SPEAKER_02]: She wrote a very, very, very foundational relationship book called Mating In Captivity, all about like, [SPEAKER_02]: marriage and you know how relationships fall apart and like what happens when people stop being individuals and get to like interdependent in a way that is unhealthy.

[SPEAKER_02]: A stair Perrell was a consultant on the movie and like went through that process with them. [SPEAKER_02]: Wow. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think one her podcast listenership is about to skyrocket.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I like listening to her because she is French and sounds like my grandmother, but she's the exact same accent, but I think that helped all of it, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like that made all these like the couples felt very very very lived in because of that process. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was, I think it's cool that they did that. [SPEAKER_02]: And then also they shot in sequential order. [SPEAKER_02]: So they didn't shoot out of order, which also movies never do.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But then it's like so like the the escalation was like actually, you know, in the order, it was escalating. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think that's really I think all of that stuff like it's amazing that she was able to do that and I know this was like independently financed and produced and like a 24 came in as the distributor at the end, but she did all the work But like it's just incredible to shoot on film shoot it in sequence get two weeks of rehearsals like all that stuff is like It made the end product [SPEAKER_02]: something so unique that I don't think it would have been if they lost any of that stuff.

[SPEAKER_02]: Totally. [SPEAKER_01]: And that the actors were all perfect for their roles. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Like they were all so, so good. [SPEAKER_01]: And.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's like Penelope accrues is just like the second you see her, it's like she is gorgeous in a way that makes you, you know, nervous and feel like you're talking to somebody sort of like on a different level than you. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and she also. [SPEAKER_02]: I was thinking about her performance in this movie because she hasn't, she did this interesting, everyone is kind of doing like a pretty big swing. [SPEAKER_02]: Like I don't think they're doing anything like crazy.

[SPEAKER_02]: But like, the performance is quite broad. [SPEAKER_02]: Like the Olivia Wilde's like anxious. [SPEAKER_02]: Totally, you know, crazy person and Seth Rogan's like, so talky and loud and [SPEAKER_02]: Even Edward Norton, who is like a little quieter that character, but he is doing kind of like a cheeky devil sort of like It's very emotive, and what Penelope Cruz did, which is essentially she is trying to play a stair-parallel Oh, okay But she did this, she's very quiet, and it's actually quite [SPEAKER_02]: Well, Esther Parallel, I think is in her late 60s.

[SPEAKER_01]: Was she hot? [SPEAKER_02]: I think so. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I've seen a picture for a young. [SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know, but I would assume, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe that's just my French spirit coming through.

[SPEAKER_02]: But like, yeah, Penelope Cruz did this almost like, [SPEAKER_02]: Feline, like quiet, like observant. [SPEAKER_02]: It was so much more quiet that performance. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because like in the beginning, like when they first entered the apartment, it's like, she's being what could be construed as kind of a bitch, like for sure, like kind of judgmental, like a little bit of a bitch, but it's, [SPEAKER_01]: It's just, I don't know, then later you're kind of like, oh, no, this, this is just part of the larger character, like, she just is very observational and yeah, and Norton thought he was perfect in it.

[SPEAKER_01]: The only other, the only person where like I had a flash of like, oh, you know, who else could have like played this role was with him. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, Sam Rockwell could have done it too. [SPEAKER_01]: Because there were a couple moments where I thought that he was kind of giving Sam Rockwell, but maybe that's why it worked. [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's because there were only a couple moments giving that. [SPEAKER_01]: And the rest of the time, like, he is a much softer looking man than Sam Rockwell.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that might be why it works because there's also times where it's like, he is so annoying. [SPEAKER_02]: that character you know yeah he that he's doing this I mean it's funny because really truly up until the speech in the end he's sort of giving horny neighbor trope you know what I mean like oh you know he's kind of like a little

[SPEAKER_02]: soft in a way that feels sincere to him, the person, but also in sincere, a little bit like saccharan or something, but something a little seropy about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like to me, the ways in which he [SPEAKER_01]: Like was annoying was kind of like corporate guy. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's not corporate. [SPEAKER_01]: He was like a fire fire. [SPEAKER_01]: But guy who like starts like yoga and does mushrooms once and then is all of the sudden acting like he has some like window into like the universe and how to live and he's kind of like better than you in that way.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and even that he's on that emotional journey like I kind of is that guy a little bit. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just that it's group sex instead of Go-gov. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah But I did I really really liked liked his performance a lot and I also like [SPEAKER_02]: I just feel so fond towards him in this for some reason. [SPEAKER_02]: And like, I guess I, he hasn't been in a lot of stuff outside of like West Anderson movies and I think TV shows. [SPEAKER_02]: I think he's does TV. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't watch, but, but I find him his presence very like, [SPEAKER_02]: warm and soft in a way that was sweet, but yes, also I do see what you're saying.

[SPEAKER_02]: Do think that if I was hanging out with this person, I would feel that it's just because of his familiar face and tone of voice. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, which I think is like it's it was smart to not have him be like a super hot guy who's like on the level of Penelope crews. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes, and that she [SPEAKER_02]: Like, even their relationship, I mean, very funny that he's a patient.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so when that gets revealed, and Seth Rogen goes, peanut. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, even that, like, she's so kind of delighted by his softness a little bit. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like, I have seen people like that before. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, a very strong woman with a very soft guy that,

[SPEAKER_02]: in a lot of the time, you'll be like, what's going on here? [SPEAKER_02]: And then there were moments where you're like, oh, I can see that she really likes this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I also Seth Rogan, I know he plays the same guy in everything he acts in. [SPEAKER_01]: I just personally, really like that guy. [SPEAKER_01]: I really like that Rogan and stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I always like him and stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, 100% hit rate for me of Seth Rogan and stuff.

[SPEAKER_01]: I have the same feeling. [SPEAKER_01]: So I like, I loved him in this. [SPEAKER_02]: He is a guy though that occasionally, I feel the men in my life.

[SPEAKER_02]: Just have a visceral negative reaction to it. [SPEAKER_02]: And I don't really understand why. [SPEAKER_02]: He is one of those, it's almost like, you know, when women just don't like a woman and they're like, she just thinks she's so something. [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's that with him. [SPEAKER_02]: But it's like he just thinks he's so funny or something, but I don't, I, I find him to be like incredibly warm on screen, so I like, I'm like, he's so easy to root for. [SPEAKER_01]: I love his voice, I love his delivery of everything, like, I, I just like him a lot, yes, he is, he is, he are Sydney Swing, yeah, I'm so perfect.

[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, to some degree, Olivia Wilde, I think, maybe was that woman for a lot of women during the don't worry, darling years, when she wanted to dress up fans, we're mad at her. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yes, yes, and even I, if I think about, I was talking to Alex about this and was trying to like,

[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know anything about her really until I saw some like I saw book smart and I was like, oh, that was cool. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I had ever seen her in anything before that. [SPEAKER_02]: Like when it looked at her IMDB, I was like, this is a bunch of movies I have not seen. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: But I was like vaguely aware that she existed. [SPEAKER_02]: I get her mixed up with Mun, the other Olivia. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: People also have many such cases. [SPEAKER_01]: I think Olivia Wilde is like, she's a lot more talented than [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, she's more career focused on this type of thing and, you know, she just has like a totally different path and is just interesting in different ways. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know anything about Olivia, but then John Millaney.

[SPEAKER_02]: So even that, I'm like, these are just women I've never cared about. [SPEAKER_02]: Sure. [SPEAKER_02]: But the funny thing is like, with Olivia Wilde, I was telling Alex that I, [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, you know, if I just see a picture of her, she is certainly the type of woman in Los Angeles that I would avoid, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, yeah, she sort of looks like a mean Pilates woman, toadly.

[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't mean to project that onto her, but that is my instinct and I wonder if that's, [SPEAKER_02]: And I loved her in this movie and I thought she was very adorable and I thought she was like very funny and charming and I've listened to some interviews with her now I listened to my first ever call her daddy episode so that I could do my god. [SPEAKER_01]: Wow, you're in deep. [SPEAKER_01]: Dude. [SPEAKER_02]: I just wanted to know I was like, I've got this cover and then you know what?

[SPEAKER_02]: I get why people like that podcast. [SPEAKER_02]: She was, she's actually kind of an interesting, she asked some interesting questions. [SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, think I'll probably never listen to one again, but I had two hours.

[SPEAKER_02]: two hours to do a chore this weekend and I threw a call her daddy on. [SPEAKER_02]: But I hearing her talk, I was like, yeah, this is a lady that I would be scared of and I would assume she would be mean to me and I wonder if a lot of people had that reaction to her, but she's really interesting smart and talks about film. [SPEAKER_02]: This is too big of a swing and you're not going to like it, but I was listening to her talk about her movie and like the nerdy way she was talking about making the movie and I was like, this doesn't not give Matt Johnson a little bit like the enthusiasm with which she was talking I was like, wow, this has the same energy as those interviews, but she's just not like, like she's not weird like he is, right?

[SPEAKER_02]: He is weird in a totally different way. [SPEAKER_02]: I think I think her upbringing was quite strange. [SPEAKER_02]: Here's my book report on the Call of Duty episode. [SPEAKER_02]: Her parents were war correspondents. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, and so her mom would be in Afghanistan for like six months at a time, and then her dad and like they'd switch off. [SPEAKER_02]: And so for that reason, one, children of journalists, I think, always, [SPEAKER_02]: that usually spins out an interesting person.

[SPEAKER_02]: But a war correspondent is someone who's putting their life in a lot of danger. [SPEAKER_02]: And people don't like when mothers do that. [SPEAKER_02]: Totally. [SPEAKER_02]: She saw her mom take a lot of shit for that. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I think it gave her an armor for this type of thing. [SPEAKER_01]: That is so interesting because she has taken a lot of shit for that herself and it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: but it's that's what she saw a mom be yeah exactly it's like it's okay for like mom to put career before kids so it's like maybe she's doing the same thing but it's like yeah she's on her mom do that [SPEAKER_02]: And, and I think this is part of the message of the movie is like, you need to be a complete person for your kids.

[SPEAKER_02]: And, and you can't, you know, these characters are just not being a complete person because they think they need to stay together because of the kid.

[SPEAKER_02]: they see it. [SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know, I think that's really compelling to think about a Olivia Wilde's history and then leading her to this. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I just, I think it's very, it's juicy. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of stuff there. [SPEAKER_01]: That does make so much sense. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as a parallel between that and her and her career, I also learned that she got married at Burning Man at 25 years old and then divorced right away. [SPEAKER_01]: So she's just a love hard party hard kind of lady.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, man. [SPEAKER_01]: That's fine. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't necessarily, I don't want to date her, but I like her movies. [SPEAKER_01]: She looked so beautiful in this and I loved her hair, but there were many shots where because of the shirt and hair, [SPEAKER_01]: She was really, in my opinion, giving like 1950s like Soviet propaganda poster, do you see that? [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I was thinking, I was thinking like factory, like World War II factory worker. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like there's either the riveter.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I could just picture like a poster, like a drawing of her. [SPEAKER_01]: Just exactly looking like she looks in that movie, just going like, [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, Communism rocks.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I really, I did like her outfit a lot. [SPEAKER_02]: I liked everything she wore. [SPEAKER_02]: Every, all the little outfits she changed into. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, this character is cute style. [SPEAKER_01]: One thing that's making me feel insane is that online people have been like, oh, the couple's like match, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's go with it. [SPEAKER_01]: But there was a lot of good physical comedy, which you don't necessarily expect from such like a talking movie. [SPEAKER_01]: But there was a lot, like, oh my god, that just like perfect slide of the soufflé out of the fridge into the trash. [SPEAKER_01]: So good. [SPEAKER_02]: That was one of my favorite parts.

[SPEAKER_02]: That and she when she when he's going to bring up that they're having sex too lad next door and he keeps feeding him and then by the last one he just pushes her down. [SPEAKER_01]: No, she was very like sort of like loose and like looney tunes in this movie which you also don't expect from that character. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But then she plays this character so sort of like manic. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: In a way that is really funny, but also feels true to the character.

[SPEAKER_02]: Big time. [SPEAKER_02]: Big time feels true to the character. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, all the hormones stuff was so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god. [SPEAKER_01]: Like that was just like one bit of like that they were like, [SPEAKER_01]: really milking and it worked every time. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it wasn't really funny. [SPEAKER_02]: And I liked one of the physical things I liked is like the scampering from room to room, caught through a hallway, you know? [SPEAKER_02]: There's like, yeah, there seems to be like one place in the hallway where you could just catch.

[SPEAKER_01]: anyone moving away and like in some parts it felt like this apartment was just like endless room after room after room like it felt like a miao wolf like but then sometimes it didn't and then sometimes it did and yeah god when she's showing at northern the apartment she's giving him the tour and she's so just like I like when she does the like [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: I like every time she does. [SPEAKER_02]: I also did it the the cut to her standing in the shower. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_02]: So good. [SPEAKER_02]: Showing off a little bathroom she read it. [SPEAKER_01]: And the way she is just like she's not like she's like you're so rude like to Joe all the time But it's like she's also very bad at reading social cues Yes, it's like says all these really rude funny things like the when they're talking about babies and he's like we better decide soon But then she's just as bad at reading social skills and situations [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes, also there's just so many good face scenes in the that scene in any mention of menopause where her and Penelope crews like both look and the way the camera is just like Seth Rogan POV POV I just mentioned menopause to the Penelope crews.

[SPEAKER_02]: the face acting is so, it's so funny, like Penelope Cruz kind of like Olivia Wilde, yes, majorly funny with the like horrified eyebrow movements, no frozen face there, no, but Penelope Cruz would be like head tilted down like eyelashes kind of just like like burning into him, [SPEAKER_02]: I really loved it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, she is so scary in the sense where you're like, oh my god, if this woman is judging me, I'll kill him. [SPEAKER_02]: I need this woman to, I do, like, it justifies, like when you first see Penelope Cruz also, it just justifies like how hard Olivia Wilde was trying to impress her before they get to the door, where she's like, yeah, she's just so pretty totally.

[SPEAKER_02]: She's like putting stuff out. [SPEAKER_02]: The second you see her, you're like, yeah, I'd probably do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: And how like, [SPEAKER_01]: Because it's all about sex, but then it's also a comedy, and then within the story, I feel like laughter is this plot element too, where it's like the one time you see like Joe and Angela like being cute together is because like they run off and are like laughing about how crazy the situation is. [SPEAKER_01]: And then later when he's like laughing with Penelope Cruz alone, [SPEAKER_01]: at Angela's expense, it does kind of feel like a betrayal.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that it's like he's laughing with this other woman. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, and they're literally about to have sex. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's all agreed on, but you're kind of like, oh, he's like making fun of this woman. [SPEAKER_01]: And she's the wife's trying so hard. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's interesting. [SPEAKER_02]: Because I also feel like a lot of the movie is about like,

[SPEAKER_02]: something that I keep going back to is like it's about wanting to be seen and like how you can not see the person in front of you anymore and like, you know, there's really obvious lines where she's like you could tell me that once in a while and he's like, I just told you, you're just nice. [SPEAKER_02]: But also even like, I even think the part where she's showing off the bathroom feels like a [SPEAKER_02]: very funny but very sad like she's just so desperate to be seen and like approved of as worthy of something and um i don't it's just so it i i mean this is so my shit like when it's like so funny but every funny piece is like also if you think about it for one second heart wrenching [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's just like it's so sad and people shouldn't just, I don't know, I don't know, it's just it's so, I, I feel like I'm starting to lose my words because I'm just like so excited than a good movie game I've been talking all weekend about I was like oh my god listen minions was fine and Supergirl was fine to talk about but I'm so excited to like do an episode about a movie that's just good real movie

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it's it really is just like I don't think there's like anything that could have been done better and it like it really is just it does everything it does so perfectly and Every character reacts to everything [SPEAKER_01]: in a way that makes so much sense for them, like as the situation changes. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's so funny, some people online have been referring to the them trying to fuck them as a twist and it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: That's not a twist. [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, that's what was going to happen.

[SPEAKER_01]: And like, yeah, I can tell from the trailer. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, the trailer, I mean, the trailer made it clear when he's like, you, you, you me. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I feel like that was enough. [SPEAKER_02]: But I have heard like, yeah, in some like interviews, they've also been like, well, there's a twist that happens and they like, don't want to talk. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, [SPEAKER_02]: You, yeah, and I know that they don't cut the trailer, but it is like, it's at for times.

[SPEAKER_01]: We actually know what the door says and also, it wasn't in the trailer, what else would it be? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and also, you know, so funny, I have had the experience where, oh please. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, because I were going to go have dinner at someone else's house that we like a couple that we met at the gym. [SPEAKER_02]: And I had this moment where I was like, oh, what if there's... What if there's a winger? [SPEAKER_02]: And they weren't. [SPEAKER_02]: They were really nice people.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, not yet. [SPEAKER_01]: I did like the worst thing in my life.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is like, I also saw that in the original movie, the couple upstairs is younger, and it's like, this is a couple, and I think that's a really interesting change. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: From, like, it feels so much less obvious to me that's like, it's a hot older couple in a way that I think is a smart change. [SPEAKER_02]: Definitely because I think, I mean, that's interesting because I can't imagine what it would be like if they were a younger couple because I think what is like pivotal about that is like that this older couple who is is like in a healthier place, but also is like experimental and honest.

[SPEAKER_02]: They bestow wisdom and that's what's important. [SPEAKER_02]: about the experience. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And if it's a younger couple, it's like, yeah, no shit, you guys are like, hot and happy. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, the way that Olivia Wilde is like, that character, you know, could have been played as just so buttoned up and like, yeah, they're for like scandalized by the whole thing. [SPEAKER_01]: I found that that all very relatable, and I was like, oh, that's not good I was like that's like me me me so me Yeah, I yeah, I mean also just

[SPEAKER_02]: I just, I think that care, I think it's really beautiful that that character was like, not an annoying shrew and that Seth Rogan wasn't just stupid, oh, totally. [SPEAKER_02]: But the scene when they, the last scene when they are like saying how it used to be or like what they went talking to Pina and they say what they think is wrong. [SPEAKER_02]: and they both are like, not even close to understanding the same thing.

[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, it's almost like it's touching on that thing that sometimes happens in romance movies where it's like the conflict can be solved if you guys have one conversation.

[SPEAKER_02]: sort of like sad divorce version of that. [SPEAKER_02]: I think for the tail end of this conversation, I would like to know what do you think happens, like do they stay together or not? [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't even cross my mind that they might stay together. [SPEAKER_01]: Actually, and then I saw that like, oh, the ending was actually like officially ambiguous and people have different opinions on what happened because like in my mind,

[SPEAKER_01]: they couldn't possibly, because, yeah, I mean, and Penelope Cruz says that thing about like, sometimes you can start a new relationship with the same person, but like, [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if they're capable of that, because I think there's too much resentment. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they don't like each other anymore. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that in relationships, it's like, I've been in like a long-term relationship where it's like when I would go through a period of like, oh my god, get me out of here.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like we would go on like a weekend trip. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was like fun and nice. [SPEAKER_01]: And we had a nice time. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, I would feel better for a few months. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But then that feeling would always come back. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's like maybe they'll try for like a month or something, but all the same shit's like just going to come back.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, the first time I saw it, I thought, oh, maybe they'd figure it out. [SPEAKER_02]: But also it was like such a packed theater electric experience that I was like positivity pilled. [SPEAKER_02]: And the second time when I saw it yesterday, I was like, [SPEAKER_02]: they do not stay together. [SPEAKER_02]: And this is like, and there's something so a heart breaking about whenever something like that is depicted where it's like tenderness once the end is understood. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, which that.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I was reading it as because, yeah, to me, that sort of a universal thing is that like, as soon as you like realize things are over, then you immediately start having nostalgia for what you had, and nostalgia is a very tender feeling, and it makes you sweet, and it makes you soft, and it makes you loving. [SPEAKER_01]: But like, that's why, yeah, endings are so sad sometimes is because like,

[SPEAKER_01]: There's a sweetness that only comes out when you know that like this is this is it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like this is the last of it and you're, yeah, I think it's that immediately your present in your mind once it becomes your past or like you're thinking of it as your past, you start feeling like nostalgia. [SPEAKER_02]: definitely, and also the just like, is an inherent, it just feels tragic to notice that time has passed and stuff has changed and that can be like, I mean, I feel that about like, buildings.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know what I mean? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, and it just, you know, been the way relationship shift, and like, I think, [SPEAKER_02]: I think the read where they stayed together, I was thinking, like, oh, they changed their patterns. [SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think that that's the impossible for people to do. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that these people did it. [SPEAKER_02]: That was not revisiting them. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, oh, I don't think these people changed their patterns.

[SPEAKER_02]: I think that what would have fixed them is if they did stuff for themselves to become someone that the other person could see and be proud of. [SPEAKER_01]: Right and it's like I don't even know if like they could figure out how to do that within this relationship. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like sometimes you do need to change the framework of your life to start new patterns. [SPEAKER_01]: I would say that's the case for honestly most people. [SPEAKER_01]: like you have to be so evolved to change patterns within the framework of your life and yeah these are normal people they're not like crazy weird emotionally in touch evolved yeah also this movie I kept thinking about how [SPEAKER_01]: Throughout all of life, something that stays very relevant is that thing they teach you in kindergarten about eye statements, you know?

[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's, I think one of the first things you like are taught, like just as a concept of like, how to be human is like, [SPEAKER_01]: I statements instead of you statements, and how this whole movie is essentially based around this couple who doesn't use I statement, they use statements as most of us do.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, big time.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like damn, that really, is that just one of the foundational, like, truths of life? [SPEAKER_01]: Is that fucking thing you learn in kindergarten?

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, they're like a, you know, it's, they hear them from upstairs, but like, it's like a figment of their imagination that like they're over, and I'm like, I just don't think that's true.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think this movie is much more straightforward than that, but then apparently in some interview someone asked Olivia while that, and she said that was, in fact, the case, but I'm like, that can't be true. [SPEAKER_02]: There's no way. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I must have been misinterpreted or something. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: there's no way and I think that the damage that reddit has done to all of us. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a watchers of any type of media is should be studied.
