[SPEAKER_01]: Love and Comedy that's romantic if you have a lot of such a thing Not in quite some time We saw you me in Tuscany Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: We did First thing Emily, did you like this movie? [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was very cute. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a child in my mind. [SPEAKER_04]: It was very dark. [SPEAKER_01]: I found it really, really charming.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was nervous because I don't feel like I've seen a good rom-com executed in, well, I can't remember the last one. [SPEAKER_04]: No, I told me because I feel like the last like a big rom-com in theaters was like anyone but you. [SPEAKER_04]: And which I did not see. [SPEAKER_04]: That was awful. [SPEAKER_04]: I hated anyone but you. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And you know. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not weighing in on the debate, but everything with Sidney Sweeney has like a weird energy to it.

[SPEAKER_04]: No, I hate her so much. [SPEAKER_01]: I just want nothing to do with her. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll watch you for a guess. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just even going into anyone but you. [SPEAKER_04]: I had seen immaculate, and that was what really cemented me is, oh, she is the worst actress working today. [SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting, isn't that the one that people say was her good one? [SPEAKER_01]: Or is there another horror movie that she did? [SPEAKER_04]: No, there's not. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that is the one people say is her good one, which is bleak because she is so bad in it.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like, that was the movie where I was like, oh, she's so bad at acting that she will ruin anything she's in. [SPEAKER_01]: tough stuff stuff stuff stuff that we had. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, okay, the house me just came out and she's in that with Amanda Saferid who's acting her little ass off and then Sydney Sweeney is just so bad and it's so funny always getting into accidentally getting into it with straight men if you can believe it who are like, she's that bad. [SPEAKER_04]: You're exaggerating and it's like, buddy, [SPEAKER_04]: You were distracted.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is like fine and fair. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure there are plenty of male actors that I get distracted by that I'm like. [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I can't see objectively if they're good or not.

[SPEAKER_01]: But, um, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, listen, I don't want to go too deep into, you know, when, like, [SPEAKER_01]: But that was the last rom-com that was like released into theaters that I can remember Outside of like some Indies maybe I guess, but I don't I don't think I even saw the Indies There were yeah, I I can't think of any off the top of my head That's what makes this movie coming out and being good such a delight [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You've been starved for it. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, like there's romcoms are just not really something that is is it's become like Netflix Amazon Prime Hulu genre. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're like they just dumped there. [SPEAKER_01]: I really want to to really go on a tirade right now. [SPEAKER_01]: So. [SPEAKER_01]: This was the main thing I was thinking. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're listening or watching, you, listening or watching, put the distribution executive on the phone. [SPEAKER_01]: And I need to talk to them.

[SPEAKER_01]: Romcons need to be released in theaters, because every romcom I've watched straight to streaming, it's a bad experience. [SPEAKER_01]: When you're at home, you're like, [SPEAKER_01]: to aware of how stupid they are, how kind of like not funny the jokes are. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think that this is like, I'm not trying to attack rom-coms, but I don't, I think at home is the wrong environment to be introduced to them. [SPEAKER_01]: Like they can't work their way into your heart, if you're watching them for the first time at home.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like when I think about people we meet on vacation, which should have been an easy slam dunk, but if you watch it at home, [SPEAKER_01]: This is dumb, yeah, like, and yeah, I just feel so strongly like this movie really, really cemented that for me that I thought back at any of the streaming romcoms I've watched and I'm like, oh, those all should have gone to theaters, it is an easy way to get people to love a romcom and also. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel really frustrated with the state of like media for women that exists because what gets released in theaters is the house made and calling Hoover adaptations.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that we're missing a large segment of the population who isn't like people who like the books they sell at Target, which is not a dig, but that is that genre. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and like I don't really like that stuff and I'm a woman and I want to have a nice time at the movies and my choices are always like [SPEAKER_01]: sad boy drama movie, you know, some man's sad some yokeem tree or story about a bad father or something, which is fine, but I'd much rather have a few romcoms a month sprinkled in to balance it all out.

[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's also obvious that like people want rom-coms because like you said last week that some teenage girls were in your screening of the drama, which it was kind of a rom-com, which I wasn't romantic and I wanted to get into the rom-com scale in a minute, but like I think they probably wanted something like this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and I hope they went to see it, because I really thought this like nailed it in a great way. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, okay, this is kind of off to public, but it didn't just remind me when I used to nanny.

[SPEAKER_04]: There was one time where the teenage girl was going to hang out with her with her friends for one of the friends of birthday and the birthday girl loved Timothy Shalame so much that what she chose for them to do for her birthday was all go see beautiful boy in the [SPEAKER_04]: whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, who [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my theater wasn't full, but was busier, you know, I think living the suburbs, my like understanding of when theaters are full or not, I mean, might be more realistic to the rest of America, but I'm sure. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, like, but it was busier than, you know, I saw two movies yesterday and it was certainly busier than the first movie I saw, which was the weird Japanese horror that [SPEAKER_04]: You'll be game best friends by the end of it. [SPEAKER_04]: Those are your boys now.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure I'm sure we were all logging it on letterbox together as a group. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, the theater, like the people were really into it that's odd and it was like a really good mix of like [SPEAKER_01]: all different types of people. [SPEAKER_01]: All different age groups. [SPEAKER_01]: I had like this group next to me of like 70 plus year old like women who are seeing it together and like a big groups of like 30 year olds. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I just I found it very cute that like the girls all got together.

[SPEAKER_01]: The two finally enjoy a rom-com. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was like a lot of groups of women and also a lot of couples. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, and out as soon as it ended, I heard this one woman behind me and I loved this. [SPEAKER_01]: I just heard her go I need it that I'm glad she got it Yeah, it yeah, it really did manage to be fun and funny Do you want to talk about like some of the performances in it? [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I first, okay, just because I feel like I'm going to reference this.

[SPEAKER_04]: I, this made me think about rom-coms more than I have ever thought about rom-coms. [SPEAKER_04]: It's just that I'm not really a big rom-com person. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't necessarily seek them out. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't even look forward, like I wasn't necessarily looking forward to this, just because it's like not, I don't look forward to rom-coms, necessarily. [SPEAKER_04]: But I think that like,

[SPEAKER_04]: This specific type of romcom, there is something scientifically that is like a bomb to the soul, where it's almost like it has the same effect on the brain as like a benzo, where it just sort of like, comes everything down, because I'm like, okay, there's like something like the drama, which is like technically a romcom, but it's like [SPEAKER_04]: a deconstruction of the romcon almost. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's, you know, that's spiking everyone's court as all. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, then there's like when I got home last night out of curiosity, I rewatched a straight-to-streaming romcon that I remembered liking when it first came out, which was plus one.

[SPEAKER_04]: Did you ever, I don't think I saw that. [SPEAKER_00]: Who's in that one? [SPEAKER_04]: Jack Quaid and Maya or Skine? [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I remember liking that one and then that one's sort of in the middle where it like is very much a rom com but still sort of like real world [SPEAKER_04]: It does reckon with like human flaws and relationships and how that can be like complicated sometimes. [SPEAKER_04]: And then there's like this, you mean Tuscany is to me the purest form of rom-com, where it's like, [SPEAKER_04]: It has essentially no basis in any human experience anyone's ever had in their life.

[SPEAKER_04]: And you don't have to think about what happens to relationships after the honeymoon period. [SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to think about people holding grudges or things coming up later. [SPEAKER_04]: Everything's just shiny and perfect and nice, and it's like that is the, that to me is the purest kind of rom-com. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like completely ideal and pure fantasy without, but not like not fantasy like it's, you know, various dragons and shit, but fantasy like it's just it's the dream of like how stuff can go perfectly.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean down to like, I don't think that's what Italy is like. [SPEAKER_04]: No, it's, it's Pixar, Italy, and I love that, I feel like every great that type of rom-com has to have some bullshit event that everyone's talking about all the time. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's a big, baking competition or, you know, something like that. [SPEAKER_04]: And so the fact that they kept talking about like, the last day of the summer festival, I was like, yes, just letting it wash over me. [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, the last day of the summer festival.

[SPEAKER_05]: That sounds so important to me. [SPEAKER_05]: And it's nothing could matter more. [SPEAKER_05]: The last day of the summer festival.

[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I completely agree with that. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I, I think in the first five minutes of the movie, so it opens with, um, Hallie Bailey, as I say her name, I've never heard her anyone say it out loud. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just realizing. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, waking up in this beautiful house and walking in this dog and putting this, there was just like, there were a few moments in that like ideal first minute where I was like, oh, I might not going to like this and then it was quickly revealed that that's like, [SPEAKER_01]: I felt the same.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, no. [SPEAKER_01]: And then when it was pulled into reality, like, into reality is maybe strong closer to reality. [SPEAKER_01]: A reality I can understand or like, connect to then I loved it from that point on. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, because I, um, I just knew from the, you know, the summary that, like, she was a chef. [SPEAKER_04]: And so in that first few minutes, I was like, oh, is she going to be like, you know, it's, this is going to be the type of romcom where it's like a high powered workaholic woman goes to a small town and then meets a small town guy and is like, [SPEAKER_04]: uh, finds the real meaning of life, which is not my phase of of the genre.

[SPEAKER_04]: And so then once that they very quickly pull that back, and then I was like, okay, few. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, she's a person. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that she's a person that I can connect to. [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I don't think I've ever seen anything Halley Bailey has been in before. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I knew I was aware of her. [SPEAKER_04]: I think the only thing she's been in, because she's like newer to acting as the little mermaid. [SPEAKER_01]: right because I knew her as a musician.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I found her so precious, like so kind of, I think my only complaint would be that she reads quite young to me in a way that made me sometimes feel like not logically but emotionally I was feeling like protective. [SPEAKER_04]: I think is like

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, she's in her mid 20s, but I'm like, is she like 24 or is she like 27? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she reads younger than that. [SPEAKER_01]: Like she reads like maybe 18. [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And, but I just, I loved her styling in this. [SPEAKER_01]: I felt, I mean, as someone who loves a big shirt over a set of outfit, I was like, wow, I finally, I'm represented. [SPEAKER_01]: And she's somehow straddled this thing where it was like, she's beautiful and like a theory, beautiful, movie star, beautiful, and yet felt like a real woman to me, like she had her sneakers on, she had her big shirt on, she was just kind of like, she wasn't [SPEAKER_01]: $10,000 could tour outfits.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: Which is like, what happens a lot in rom-coms, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And they got to make their money where they can. [SPEAKER_01]: I like, there were definitely a couple of moments in this where I was like, oh my god, the product placement is too much. [SPEAKER_01]: Would anyone like an apparel spritz? [SPEAKER_01]: Here, you seem to stress my mouserati. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay, but during, very specifically, during the mouserati scene, I found myself thinking, you know what, I think this is okay, like for a romcom to just make their money how they can to get it across the finish line, like I would rather the romcom exist and have [SPEAKER_01]: Then not exist at all, you know, in this day and age, what movie doesn't have a 40-second car-commercial number of the, I mean, I will say that the product placement was in elegant in this one, what's like, okay.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that's actually an okay price to pay if it gets across across the finish line of being in a theater. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, then I think that's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: If it's only on streaming. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_05]: Get out of here. [SPEAKER_05]: Get that part of the car out of here.

[SPEAKER_01]: But I loved her. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't I didn't find that she was given much of the comedy. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, I feel like the comedy was mostly in the Italian people, yes, which I feel like for rom-coms is like pretty typical, um, is that like the side characters are like the really, you know, cookie ones and so they're like, yeah, well, you know, my rom-com

[SPEAKER_01]: heroine of choice is Meg Ryan. [SPEAKER_01]: I think there has a lot to do with my specific age and so the specific age I was when I was going to see Rob Coms and theaters and Meg Ryan was pretty much always funny. [SPEAKER_01]: and they gave her a lot of the funny hearts. [SPEAKER_01]: But then a lot of the other, like she, I think her and Julia Roberts were like set a part from everyone else in that sense. [SPEAKER_01]: Because a lot of the other ones that I can think of seeing throughout my life, if the girl in the movie was funny, it was because she's kind of one of the guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean? [SPEAKER_01]: It was like Kate Hudson like being like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not drama like that, or they never said stuff like that. [SPEAKER_01]: But I think of how to lose a guy in 10 days as like kind of a mean version of a rom-com. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never seen it. [SPEAKER_01]: It just, the energy is not good to me. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, people who grew up, I think people who saw that one at the right age will feel totally differently. [SPEAKER_01]: But I think because I'm like, so Meg Ryan Tomhanks piled about rom-coms, I'm like, no, [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's to be a big sweety and they don't have to be that hot It's better if they're not I Mean that this one everyone was a big sweety for sure everybody was a big sweety and hot I think that I because I might my acting take away was And I don't mean this is like a negative and it's also fine because she [SPEAKER_04]: was a Buntel recently, just a musician.

[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think Hallie Bailey is like the strongest actress in general, but I think she's good at, I thought she was like, good at being a Disney princess. [SPEAKER_04]: And this was very Disney princess vibes. [SPEAKER_04]: And so it's like, I think she's good at that. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think it's fine when there's someone who's just [SPEAKER_04]: one specific type of acting, and you just put them in that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you played other strength. [SPEAKER_01]: And like, yeah, I think she really her strength is the sort of like wide-eyed sweetness.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, like I don't see her doing like a drama necessarily super well, but it's like, that's okay. [SPEAKER_04]: She's very good at just being like just kind of like beautiful and sweet and like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: and it's like very fun to watch her do it like yeah I was like oh guys like like she's so cute and I love her and I want her to have nice things. [SPEAKER_01]: I she did in the beginning of the movie when she's just like has a chaotic life in New York City and she's like homeless.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't tell basically that and then she's interacting with her friend. [SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking this type of friend would stress me the fuck out. [SPEAKER_01]: I could not keep this person in my life. [SPEAKER_04]: It would be gone so fast. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, because also, I'm like, that is kind of a big ask. [SPEAKER_04]: To ask your pregnant friend to risk her gym off to give you a woman down. [SPEAKER_05]: That's like, that's not like not a big ask. [SPEAKER_01]: And you know what?

[SPEAKER_01]: You're very sweet, but you need to know what [SPEAKER_04]: But it's like it's so funny how I feel like in a lot of rom-coms, a big thing is the female protagonist being like a little nut and boundaryless because the premise is often something that is kind of insane, yeah, that they have to be kind of like sweet enough that it's [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, absolutely, and I liked Rijay John Page. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think I thought that he, I think I thought, for some reason, obviously, I was incorrect.

[SPEAKER_04]: I must have read a different summary for a different movie. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought he was a lawyer in this. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought he was like a lawyer, I thought he was gonna be a lawyer who's also like visiting Italy, like a British lawyer. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I could see how that, I was like, oh, just like a small town, Italian lawyer. [SPEAKER_04]: But um, so I think I thought maybe just because of his bridging character, I thought he would be like grumpier. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it would be more like grumpy guy, sweet, wide-eyed girl, having a more contentious relationship.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, I know that that existed for one one scene once exactly one scene, but I did find him I, you know, I was watching him in this movie thinking like I'd like to watch this guy play a huge asshole like I'd love to watch this guy play like [SPEAKER_01]: a tech bro, like a, you know, tech bro CEO or something. [SPEAKER_01]: There was something about like the way he could do those scenes where he was a little rude to people that I was like, I'd like to dig deeper on the skill of, I mean, I mean, he, because he's definitely a bigger asshole and in Bridgerton, yeah, than in this.

[SPEAKER_04]: So he clearly can do that well, but I was also surprised by how much he could do big sweetie well. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he does, he, when he wants to, he can really make the eyes quite sad. [SPEAKER_01]: He can make take those eyes and just make them go to sad. [SPEAKER_01]: You're like, oh, give him what he wants. [SPEAKER_04]: So, I mean, in chemistry is like what makes or breaks a wrong mind. [SPEAKER_04]: I did think they would come a stream. [SPEAKER_01]: Me too. [SPEAKER_01]: I really liked watching them together.

[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was like very fun and like sexy in the right parts and sweet in the right. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just all of that stuff really worked and as for the Italians, they were kind of all over the place in terms of like, what movie everyone was in. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they just like chose by themselves and just went with it and you know what if there's anything I know about Italians it's that that's sort of what they do for anything. [SPEAKER_04]: Also, using sexier reminded me that an important element I forgot of this kind of romcom is that it's like weirdly completely sexeless.

[SPEAKER_04]: It can be like sexy, like sometimes there will be like a shirt off and everyone goes, but like, no penetration. [SPEAKER_04]: No penetration. [SPEAKER_01]: Really no kissing, it'll be very end. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, like this kind of rom-com, you just kind of are going through it and you're kind of like, okay, no one has holes and that's good. [SPEAKER_01]: We are all Barbie people. [SPEAKER_04]: No holes. [SPEAKER_04]: Good. [SPEAKER_04]: Safe, nice.

[SPEAKER_01]: Lissers, I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: I have a cough. [SPEAKER_01]: I can't control it. [SPEAKER_01]: And yes, I did notice that it was completely sexless. [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought in the beginning it was quite funny that even [SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't even, yeah, kiss that guy in the beginning. [SPEAKER_01]: Then it's like, they just walk into a room together. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's the most hint at sex that we get. [SPEAKER_05]: Right. [SPEAKER_05]: And it's like, uh-oh.

[SPEAKER_04]: It was considered, and they walk in. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's a little like, brown, brown, brown, brown. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Just like immediately, no. [SPEAKER_04]: That is not happening. [SPEAKER_01]: No, um, I did, I will say the most sex that came up in the movie was the extremely horny sister who again, I loved, I loved her performance, I got she's very fun. [SPEAKER_01]: She was great, fully in a different movie than everyone else. [SPEAKER_01]: She was going at a completely different way, but it was so charming and it's crazy that [SPEAKER_01]: but it's so worked.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I went to work because like, they were Italian and you're just kind of like, okay, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I didn't like some of the, there were definitely moments where. [SPEAKER_01]: Some of the Italians, I was thinking of that old racist cartoon of Italians, where it's like a man walks into a kitchen with his family goes, someone touch a mice baguette. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's sort of like some of these depictions of Italians feel like a racist cartoon.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they don't want their spaghetti touched. [SPEAKER_01]: So I get it. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it was funny because the woman whose house she was watching in the beginning was Nia Vardolos. [SPEAKER_01]: Vardolos? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, which I can't even tell you how obsessed I was with my big factory-quietting as a child. [SPEAKER_01]: That's in my top three. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, rom-coms. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I guess it would be in line too, because it was like, I was obsessed, but it's like, you know, that's another sort of like a big crazy Mediterranean family.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, and I loved seeing her, it almost felt like a blessing on a rom-com. [SPEAKER_01]: To be blessed by one of the patron saints with rom-comminus. [SPEAKER_04]: the sister was great.

[SPEAKER_01]: The mom is like an Italian actress that I've seen since the 90s. [SPEAKER_01]: I just have seen the woman in everything all the time. [SPEAKER_01]: There's an Italian lady. [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't recognize her but she did feel like the kind of like beautiful but with eye bags that you can only be in like European [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you know, absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and she's play. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I can remember her in the 90s and 2000s playing like an extremely hot lady.

[SPEAKER_04]: So I can see that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's funny that she's mom, mom. [SPEAKER_01]: Now mom character. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I, I even enjoyed and I don't always enjoy this. [SPEAKER_01]: I even enjoyed the character that wanted to be an influencer. [SPEAKER_01]: Wow. [SPEAKER_01]: He was funny. [SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of, there's, I think putting a talian, putting an Italian filter on that type of character, adds something to it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, funnier. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I felt neutral on him.

[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, I could take relief this guy, but I didn't, he didn't bother me. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just think he added, he added to some of the comedy moments when it would be like the sister being like big and horny The plumber And then And then he comes in with his camera and he's, you know, doing the thing I thought it like work balanced well together sort of like an Italian dish I liked [SPEAKER_04]: I liked the little taxi driver of the tiny car. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought he was fun.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was my favorite. [SPEAKER_04]: He was great and also that is such a fantasy element in itself. [SPEAKER_04]: Up there actually with Ferries and Unicorns, like an older man who is kind and wanting to help you and be your friend and you're not even worried that he's trying to fuck you. [SPEAKER_01]: Really? [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just thinking that where I was like, God, this is up there with the romance of the rom-com, where it's like, what if there's a kind older man who was like genuinely just like there to like help you and it wasn't even on your mind like, oh God, this guy's trying to fuck me.

[SPEAKER_01]: So beautiful, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That is genuinely a fantasy that I've never experienced.

[SPEAKER_04]: You're like, oh man, I bet that would be so nice. [SPEAKER_01]: uh... yet looks like it would be so nice so happy for this character that she has this this buddy who's not trying to fuck i was fascinated by that care i mean first of all love that he's always eating a sandwich just great good detail um... i was fascinated by that character and wondering why it doesn't matter if he makes any money or not

[SPEAKER_01]: like she's not paying you for any of this and she's I mean I guess he had that that paying customer near the end he he did have one paying customer so that was the one who piped in with something that was cute yeah yeah he but I loved that I thought that cab driver and her also had like great like buddy comedy friend yeah they were very cute chemistry [SPEAKER_04]: I loved it. [SPEAKER_04]: No, it was gonna be okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Let's, I guess we should try to go in some sort of order so we don't miss anything.

[SPEAKER_04]: But okay, so yeah, she meets the guy, Matteo. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes. [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, he's kind of charming in like the beginning. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes. [SPEAKER_04]: And she's at the hotel. [SPEAKER_04]: they don't hook up. [SPEAKER_04]: He's like, I have this villa. [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm also assuming these families are very rich. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was wondering about this town where everybody has a villa in the Netherlands. [SPEAKER_04]: And like a well-capped duck villa, too.

[SPEAKER_04]: Not like an old money, but now there's no money where it's like falling apart. [SPEAKER_04]: Like these are like a nice modernized villa. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, insane. [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, I just have the scenty villa, and then she's like, oh, I was going to go to Italy with my mom. [SPEAKER_04]: She died. [SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, two for two on the dead moms with the movies that Hally Bailey has been in. [SPEAKER_04]: Because Disney Princess obviously dead mom. [SPEAKER_04]: Just adds to the Disney Princess of it all, where it's like, yeah.

[SPEAKER_04]: So she does go to Italy, she only has $500 in her savings, and then she has a ticket from her canceled Italy trip. [SPEAKER_04]: She's a culinary school dropout because her mom got sick. [SPEAKER_04]: And which also I love that she had like the classic romcom, like nothing is more romcom than like baker or chef. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, or florist, but also nothing is more wrong common than like, oh, I almost completed it, but I stopped right before, but it's my passion still, and I do love that later in the movie, when we finally see her make something, it's a dish where you put raw tomatoes on bread.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she made appreciate it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's, you know, not hard to make. [SPEAKER_04]: No, I, during this scene, I was wondering if it's like a chef. [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, is there a way to like, [SPEAKER_04]: make this like where where someone would taste and it'd be like, oh, you're like really special at this or there is ceiling to how good it can be because it ultimately it is I mean, I'm sure that in Italy it's so good because it's it's the best ingredients yes, but I also think about that I also think in Italy.

[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty hard to impress people who live there. [SPEAKER_04]: I would imagine. [SPEAKER_01]: There are ingredients that they use every day. [SPEAKER_04]: It would be like trying to impress a British person with your beans on toast. [SPEAKER_04]: You're being wet food. [SPEAKER_04]: You would say, look, I put these beautiful canned beans on a slice of white bread for you. [SPEAKER_04]: Tell me what you think. [SPEAKER_04]: Do you love white? [SPEAKER_04]: And they're like, no one's ever made it so good.

[SPEAKER_04]: And you said you couldn't cook, but look at these beans on toast. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, she does. [SPEAKER_01]: She drops out of culinary school because her mom died. [SPEAKER_01]: She tells her whole sob story about it to the guy. [SPEAKER_04]: and then we really flash quickly to like the decision has been made she's now in Italy it's just taking a bus to this guy's house yeah if this guy's town but guess what it's the summer festival oh no it's the summer festival how could she not know it's the summer festival very popular event so there's no hotel rooms anywhere even close so what do you do what's a girl to do [SPEAKER_01]: Breaking and entering.

[SPEAKER_04]: You gotta go to the guy's empty villa. [SPEAKER_01]: And you gotta do a B&E. [SPEAKER_04]: Luckily, even in Italy, people keep spare keys under a ceramic frog.

[SPEAKER_01]: So. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was, I mean, it is funny once she, you know, I, again, love that it's like a suspension of disbelief experience this movie, but it is funny that she just like, it's just one old, probably what I have to imagine is the easiest type of lock to pick. [SPEAKER_01]: this like old skeleton key type thing, it's like give me a bobby pin and I'll be in there in a minute.

[SPEAKER_01]: This type of house, no security system. [SPEAKER_04]: Give me a fucking break. [SPEAKER_04]: No, I know. [SPEAKER_04]: But that's the thing is like in romcoms like this, I truly do want everything to be so easy. [SPEAKER_04]: I want them to essentially be like no conflict. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, almost no friction except for between the two leads. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I just want everything to be like a very smooth line. [SPEAKER_04]: But then even between the two leads, I never wanted to get so far that like anyone gets truly upset.

[SPEAKER_04]: You know? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I want things to be like pull stops, things to be revealed or whatever before anyone gets too upset. [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And the house is gorgeous. [SPEAKER_01]: beautiful. [SPEAKER_01]: And she has a great time until his mom and grandma come to clean it. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, which I was like, okay, that's how often are they doing this?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if I were his mom and grandma, I'd be staying in that house. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I guess they have their own beautiful villa. [SPEAKER_01]: But we can see inside, we don't know what the inside of the villa is like. [SPEAKER_04]: True, maybe that one is all rundown. [SPEAKER_04]: But no, because he had the money to buy this villa. [SPEAKER_04]: But, which I'm, where's the money coming from? [SPEAKER_04]: They own a tiny restaurant in a small, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you know, that's like a frictionless thing that is like just has to happen in these movies, but I do find myself counting everyone's money.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, how are you guys all living this life. [SPEAKER_04]: It's nice. [SPEAKER_04]: And then conveniently, she finds an ugly engagement ring in a drawer. [SPEAKER_01]: like the type of engagement ring that like a child would draw. [SPEAKER_04]: So ugly, but then I like to like the the no no was like my ring and I'm like there's no fucking way like an 80 something year old woman in Italy's ring would have been in a white metal. [SPEAKER_01]: are you kidding me and that's some real jewelry store exclusive there's no some niche that some niche expertise that you're sharing as the jewelry they're not way but it is it's just like a brilliant cut in like a real basic bitch like platinum setting yeah it doesn't it yeah and also I was a little [SPEAKER_01]: Well, why don't you have your ring?

[SPEAKER_01]: What do you mean your ring? [SPEAKER_01]: Why, why is it in a drawer if it's your ring? [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I guess she, I guess she gave it to him to propose to that other girl. [SPEAKER_01]: And other girl, the cartoon, the racist cartoon of like Italian, Tch, Pussy. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, what I thought was very funny about her is that she's very, I mean, you've seen the animated little mermaid. [SPEAKER_04]: You were a, you were a child's, the first movie I saw in theaters. [SPEAKER_04]: She's very Vanessa from the Little Mermaid.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, that's so funny. [SPEAKER_04]: So once again, once again, her main [SPEAKER_04]: But, yeah, so she happens to have the ring, so then the mom's like, don't you see? [SPEAKER_04]: She's engaged to Mateo. [SPEAKER_04]: And she goes, uh, yes, um, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, really optimistic of the mom. [SPEAKER_01]: It feels like. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, oh yeah, cos Mateo also, like, [SPEAKER_04]: The went away like he goes to his family and then hasn't talked to them since so it's not like they're like checking it and being like what the fuck And she's like he's coming he's coming in a few days and they're like by the last day of the summer festival Is he coming by the last day of the summer festival?

[SPEAKER_01]: Uh-huh. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he is [SPEAKER_04]: Um, and then she goes to a family dinner the next day, and that's where I mean, just like a dream gorgeous, and then it turns out, oh, and also in the town before she went to the village, she met Michael, who is Rajesh on page, and they had a slightly flirty, but like, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: but openly hostile, direction about a sandwich. [SPEAKER_04]: And then it turns out he's part of the family. [SPEAKER_04]: Who knew? [SPEAKER_01]: Who knew?

[SPEAKER_01]: I do like that she...

[SPEAKER_01]: That she said you should be nice to me were the only and then he like I can't remember what he interrupted her to say But that reference of like we're the only black people down I thought was very funny and like well Placed because that was a Thing I was thinking was like it's like it's Italy doesn't have like the most amazing Reputation for how they treat Other races [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm sure not any rural small town. [SPEAKER_01]: And so it was nice to have that just like point it out.

[SPEAKER_04]: Sure. [SPEAKER_04]: Just like addressed and then they can just move on and have their little Italian fantasy. [SPEAKER_01]: Perfect. [SPEAKER_04]: It's perfect. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: So it turns out he's like the the nephew of the mom. [SPEAKER_04]: And then when you know his parents are dead too. [SPEAKER_04]: So then they adopted him, which I'll come in. [SPEAKER_04]: He's basically brothers with Mateo. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, but they're kind of enemies as well. [SPEAKER_01]: And what follows after this, I would say, almost doesn't need a recap because it is just typical rom-com up and down, up and down, stuff happens.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're forced together. [SPEAKER_01]: They have to, yes, they're feelings. [SPEAKER_04]: Herring regime page very openly are falling in love in front of every one, in front of everyone. [SPEAKER_04]: Just, just like Google eyes in front of everyone. [SPEAKER_04]: And then Matteo comes and then Matteo shows up because the bitch ex-fiance called him and so he shows up and he does have a Normal reaction to a woman who wants I think that that is actually that is actually what this movie did really well is like for how heightened the fantasy is [SPEAKER_01]: Every element of it is quite heightened to like how Italians are treating people of the crisis in a world down to how the guy is reacting when she just is at his house pretending to be as fiancee.

[SPEAKER_01]: The reactions are [SPEAKER_01]: saying and exist in the same reality that we exist in, but then it just will like, go, this is, yeah, they're not insane. [SPEAKER_01]: It's fine. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, so they even, even they do give her reason for breaking and entering into the villa. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, she does try, it's not her first, it's not first thought, best thought. [SPEAKER_04]: It's she does try pretty hard. [SPEAKER_04]: to get hotels and then she does ultimately try to go home after she initially lies about being the fiance.

[SPEAKER_04]: She does try to leave, but it would be $2,000 to change her ticket and she doesn't have that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like just the perfect balance of like, please suspend your disbelief to enjoy this fantasy, but you are in a safe pair of hands. [SPEAKER_01]: We will not just abandon you in something insane. [SPEAKER_01]: We're guiding you through an experience that is gonna make sense to you and feel will allow you to let go and feel like. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like will it knowledge that like, this guy is reasonably like, are you fucking insane?

[SPEAKER_04]: What is this? [SPEAKER_04]: Then follow the realistic thread of him being like, do you have borderline personality disorder? [SPEAKER_04]: Are you a pathological liar? [SPEAKER_04]: Who does this? [SPEAKER_04]: This is an insane lie. [SPEAKER_04]: Are you like I'm scared of you? [SPEAKER_04]: He's just kind of like, you know what? [SPEAKER_04]: I understand your explanation. [SPEAKER_04]: I accept that. [SPEAKER_04]: And I can benefit from this too. [SPEAKER_04]: Let's do it. [SPEAKER_01]: he's somehow the most regulated man on earth, but they do she go, they go back to the family.

[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, you're going to tell them because they are already always mad at me. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not going to be the bad guy here. [SPEAKER_01]: You have to tell them, she goes to tell them and then he realizes how happy they are. [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, just kidding, we are in love. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's continue the lie. [SPEAKER_03]: Yay!

[SPEAKER_01]: and then everyone continues being happy for a while and you know there's some yada yada cooking stuff that happens that like you feel I know is the core thing that is about her character but also doesn't feel important it just feels important that it puts her in a place [SPEAKER_04]: You know, sometimes romcoms like this make me really think about how, like, if I ever found myself in a romcom situation like this, I don't have, like, a skill that I could whip out that, like, ultimately is what, like, [SPEAKER_04]: It's like, oh, I can bake that cake for your brother's wedding that got smashed.

[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a really good pastry shop. [SPEAKER_04]: There's always something. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't have any of those skills. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I don't have any rom-com skills. [SPEAKER_01]: You don't have a physical skill, perhaps, but you know how to talk into a microphone on stage, and I think that that could come in handy. [SPEAKER_01]: What if the host of our big fundraiser died, and we need someone, I don't think maybe they didn't die. [SPEAKER_01]: That's that. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe they're like really old and like mean.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they hit their head and not like, can't do the big fundraiser who will host this with stage fright. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, and then so like I MC some sort of like local auction at Christmas. [SPEAKER_04]: And then my man watches me MCing and she's like, oh, she MCs so good. [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you do have a skill.

[SPEAKER_01]: Mine would have to be if a podcast producer died. [SPEAKER_01]: I keep killing these characters. [SPEAKER_01]: People don't die that much in rock-outs.

[SPEAKER_04]: I just read a book that was kind of like a rom-com. [SPEAKER_04]: It was kind of a mystery, but it was also kind of a rom-com about a podcast.

[SPEAKER_04]: What was the book? [SPEAKER_04]: Do you, it's called this story, you might save your life? [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Podcast rom-com? [SPEAKER_04]: It was mostly a mystery, it was more of a mystery. [SPEAKER_04]: But then I guess, I was trying to run calm. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: They fall in love. [SPEAKER_04]: The podcast is full of love. [SPEAKER_01]: Finally, podcast gets the podcast and gets the respect it deserves. [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, so she cooks and then it turns out.

[SPEAKER_04]: So Matayu at one point is like, they're so happy. [SPEAKER_04]: Let's actually get married. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which then she is correct in being like, of course, you can say, no. [SPEAKER_04]: Even though it would be cool to be able to like stay there. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, she gets too later for better reasons, but it's like, is that the worst thing? [SPEAKER_04]: I know, yeah, especially if she can get him to do no pre-not. [SPEAKER_04]: Here if you go, he's clearly rich, but then it turns out he's cheating on her with Isabella slash, which is like not cheating, you know, but he's not being very discreet about I guess yet to my situation Michael is like, oh, he's cheating because he still thinks that they're engaged.

[SPEAKER_01]: And during that final sequence at the last day of the summer festival, I like that Isabella, is that her name the other woman? [SPEAKER_01]: I like that Isabella is dressed like the Flamingo emoji. [SPEAKER_01]: I loved her dress. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought she looked so beautiful and hot. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it just sort of is like, again, further, I know Flamingo is not Italian, but it just to the American mind.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's all Europe, you know, and so I did think it was funny to even make her into an Italian cartoon. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you only see her twice or three times. [SPEAKER_01]: You see her in jeans at one point, which is like whatever that should she looks great. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a really the first outfit. [SPEAKER_01]: The first time you see her, she's dressed like a tablecloth at a rustic winery. [SPEAKER_01]: And then you see her in her flamingo dance or dress. [SPEAKER_04]: She was this lady.

[SPEAKER_04]: It's a cartoon. [SPEAKER_04]: And she was a gorgeous, and also was the only person wearing like a floor length gown to the last day of the summer festival. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, everyone else was in like street wear. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, that actually does bring me to something I needed to bring up. [SPEAKER_04]: because during that same day, last day of the summer festival, of course. [SPEAKER_04]: No, sorry, this was not the last day of the summer festival. [SPEAKER_04]: This was the Barrel Race Day.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Which Barrel Race Day also a sport that already exists and is different, so that it's fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Is it different? [SPEAKER_04]: Is it not that? [SPEAKER_01]: Barrel Racing is horses. [SPEAKER_01]: You ride a horse and you like it's a rodeo sport. [SPEAKER_01]: You ride horses around barrels and do it faster than everybody else.

[SPEAKER_04]: They just pushed some barrels. [SPEAKER_04]: They rolled some barrels. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe called the barrel rolling. [SPEAKER_04]: Anyways, they had Halley Bailey, whose name is Brianna, slash Anna, as they call her.

[SPEAKER_04]: In an outfit, specifically in a yellow cardigan where I was carrying skirt, [SPEAKER_04]: the cardigan in particular. [SPEAKER_04]: I just want to talk to whoever put that on her and made her wear that for multiple scenes. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't, I don't have a gun. [SPEAKER_04]: I just want to talk normal style. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not mad. [SPEAKER_04]: We don't. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not mad. [SPEAKER_04]: I just have questions about why was that cardigan even an option in the costume department?

[SPEAKER_04]: Why was it chosen? [SPEAKER_04]: Why was it kept on? [SPEAKER_04]: It was the ugliest fucking gourmet. [SPEAKER_04]: I've ever seen in my life. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just like, you know, they had her in a lot of flowy things. [SPEAKER_01]: And I liked that choice. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I do think that's realistic, right? [SPEAKER_01]: For a... [SPEAKER_04]: I liked it when it was like the oversized shirts and stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: But it is interesting that that card again was like not appropriate for someone her age.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like she's like cheeko's ass thing I've ever seen in my life. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I say I'm gonna pull you back from from this a little bit because it's okay to dress like that. [SPEAKER_01]: And she goes has some stuff that's fine. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm at the thrift store, as I see some she goes stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not so bad. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just that, yeah, it was not appropriate on her. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, didn't make sense for her character. [SPEAKER_01]: Her character would not have worn that.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, she clearly had a pretty defined sense of style that didn't include a grandmother's glowing cardigan. [SPEAKER_01]: There are just also like other variations of like a flowy garment [SPEAKER_01]: There are other variations that could have worked. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I think the thing that really made that card again look crazy was the, as I noticed it too when it was like, this is, this doesn't, I mean, I also just like, the khaki skirt, I also was like, it looks like a child drew like a rectangle skirt.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean? [SPEAKER_01]: It was like very kind of rigid and long and weird shaped. [SPEAKER_01]: the whole outfit. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the shirt was fine. [SPEAKER_01]: She's hot. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it looks kind of, she looks good in that shirt, but not this weather and not the skirts. [SPEAKER_01]: The whole outfit choice was like something went wrong with what she was originally supposed to be wearing. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, why did they do that to our girl? [SPEAKER_01]: it doesn't make sense.

[SPEAKER_01]: These items don't really make sense for this character to like own and be carrying around. [SPEAKER_04]: They don't make sense with what everyone else is wearing in the middle of summer and Italy. [SPEAKER_01]: I know, there were so many scenes where I was like, I know it's hot as fuck right now. [SPEAKER_01]: Like these people are in these like, like traditional, long sleeve, like layered garments with like, oh, yes. [SPEAKER_04]: I love the revenge scene where she just goes to the house and everyone is just sort of like dressed like a Medici.

[SPEAKER_04]: And it's just like not addressed, and then later they're not. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so weird. [SPEAKER_01]: But the barrel race happens, and then we get to the last day of the festival, and we find out [SPEAKER_01]: that the father of the family felon hit his head question mark he hit is that he also everything with such cartoon choices he had a bandage around his head that was like what you draw on bugs bunny so that we don't forget his and so she has to cook the last [SPEAKER_01]: The last day of the festival meal, she cooks grits and shrimp, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like shrimp and grits and some vegetables and and everyone loves it. [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone loves it. [SPEAKER_01]: I do believe grits is polenta isn't it the same thing? [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, but that sounds right. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, one of the little bits of realism that they snuck in there was like when she's first in the kitchen, she keeps throwing a bunch of shit out because she is always like I haven't cooked them forever. [SPEAKER_04]: I haven't cooked in years and so her first couple attempts at things.

[SPEAKER_04]: She's like, oh, this is bad, throws it out and then she, it's so it's not like the [SPEAKER_04]: figures it out. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't like that a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought that made a lot of sense. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And Mateo's nowhere to be seen. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because he's busy snogging. [SPEAKER_01]: He's snogging that other lady. [SPEAKER_01]: And then there's a big fight in the end because [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, Michael, I'm bad with the, this, this, I do have a rom-com problem where I none of the characters have names to me.

[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the names don't. [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I only knew because they said the names a lot in this. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like they said her name a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and they said Mateo a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, Michael confronts Mateo about cheating on on her and then everyone just spills the truth. [SPEAKER_01]: She she ends up confessing to the family that she was lying. [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there's a fight, yada yada. [SPEAKER_01]: So some stuff happens stuff happen.

[SPEAKER_04]: She leaves. [SPEAKER_04]: Goes to the villa, very slowly packs her little tiny bags. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: And then these convenient bags I've ever seen. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that's like that huge duffle bag hitting her thigh on every step she takes. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so annoying. [SPEAKER_04]: And then she calls her her Lorenzo. [SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I loved him. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_04]: So, oh, and I loved his little pony tail.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And is the deetus wardrobe? [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and he keeps doing like some romantic, some romantic. [SPEAKER_04]: He drives her to the bus stop.

[SPEAKER_04]: She misses the bus. [SPEAKER_00]: I like. [SPEAKER_04]: He got a mix of us on her own calm. [SPEAKER_04]: You must miss the bus. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I guess her plan there is, um, wait for 24 hours at the dirt road bus stop. [SPEAKER_01]: And then grandma, Nona, shows up and convinces her that she must go for what she believes in, which is Michael. [SPEAKER_01]: She loves Michael. [SPEAKER_04]: So no, no is the one who is suspicious of her all along. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and in any other movie, I would not have liked that character at all, but for some reason again, the way this movie was heightened, it was acceptable.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the character was kind of weird and irritating. [SPEAKER_04]: And then Anna goes, but they must all hate me. [SPEAKER_04]: And then Anna goes, turn around, and they are all standing there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Mateo who like has just a dramatic turn in how he's acting towards her, he's like, oh, you scamp. [SPEAKER_05]: So then it's all very choreographed, where it's like the whole family's there, and we go, and they go, we love.

[SPEAKER_04]: Actually, we love you. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we cut my goal, [SPEAKER_04]: Damn, if that thing doesn't go fast.

[SPEAKER_01]: Sure does, no, nothing, no, none of the choices that this character has made up into this point. [SPEAKER_01]: Make me think that I would trust her driving, but that's okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Also, she grew up in New York. [SPEAKER_04]: She does not know how to drive. [SPEAKER_01]: No, she grew up in Atlanta. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, you're right. [SPEAKER_01]: It comes up at one point. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but that, but you are right. [SPEAKER_01]: Like if she had grown up in New York, okay.

[SPEAKER_04]: I have a question. [SPEAKER_04]: In Italy, are there driver and passenger seats on the same size as ours? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I think so. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Because that was something I was wondering. [SPEAKER_04]: Because in the movie they are. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's only now. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to say something that I may be wrong [SPEAKER_04]: OK, because I was wondering, I think there are some other countries too, but like, I don't think that Mediterranean chunk that those countries do do the same thing as us, but yeah, I think he literally goes, first my villa, now my mazerati, what are you going to take next?

[SPEAKER_01]: something I don't know but it was it was corny but it was acceptable we accept the corneiness of that part and oh and Michael also runs like a bunch of vineyards like that's this thing it was like his yeah he runs a vineyard he makes wine excuse me and then you know perfect climactic scene she runs through the vineyard [SPEAKER_01]: uh singing I just remember to sing the the la serenada [SPEAKER_01]: She's, yes, she's serenading him. [SPEAKER_01]: He serenaded her earlier in the movie, and it was like a whole thing about how this is a family tradition.

[SPEAKER_01]: And when you sing, when you do the serenade, all of your crimes are forgiven. [SPEAKER_04]: And they just like, no, Michael, sing to her. [SPEAKER_04]: Sing her of any love song. [SPEAKER_01]: And he sings Mario, you should let me love you. [SPEAKER_01]: And which they were listening to in the cars that it made sense. [SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't like, [SPEAKER_01]: fully out of the blue, but I was a little struck in the scene where he sang where she was like, you are really good. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, he wants it.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's okay. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, but she creeps under the vines in a way that felt really insane and silly singing Mario's, you should let me love you. [SPEAKER_04]: That whole scene I was like, okay, thank God he does forgive her because this would be humiliating. [SPEAKER_01]: just brutal. [SPEAKER_01]: But he does in fact forgive her and they kiss and then they did a bit earlier in the movie where they are running through the vineyard and then they get rained on or not rain. [SPEAKER_01]: The sprinklers go off and he takes off his shirt to help her protect her edges for her hair and then a tour bus is like sitting there and they're you know it's like a middle-aged white [SPEAKER_01]: And then in the end, it was like the same bit, but with two black ladies on vacation, and they were like, hollering at him and it was so funny.

[SPEAKER_01]: It was so very fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, because she's like, oh, no, this is fine. [SPEAKER_04]: I just want, I have sign to tell you, even if it does brew in my edges, and then one of the women is like, Grapple, he has not that fine. [SPEAKER_04]: None of the other men in his he is. [SPEAKER_01]: It was really, really funny. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a, and like a perfect way to end it. [SPEAKER_04]: We need to know that everything's working out. [SPEAKER_04]: And she's run in the restaurant now.

[SPEAKER_04]: The dad with the head injury is retired. [SPEAKER_04]: She's run in the restaurant, her and Michael are together. [SPEAKER_04]: She's cooking in five and sheels, Mateo and Isabella are together, and just there and everyone's like everyone's happy and having a nice time. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, happily ever after in the Disneyland version of Italy. [SPEAKER_04]: And I just love that, like, I think it's beautiful and rom-coms, like, that's like, no one cares that she did, like, a big elaborate lie.

[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's beautiful. [SPEAKER_04]: That she committed fraud. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, the mom, like, when they see her, the bus office, she's like, family doesn't lie to each other and then they all tell a little secret. [SPEAKER_04]: And then the sister's like, I regret having an affair with Luigi, the plumber. [SPEAKER_02]: Just kidding is a joke!

[SPEAKER_01]: I do, I just remember that there's one. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think I like really who did and haulered when she made this joke. [SPEAKER_01]: When the sister is like, something's something late like my period. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, if that's a real piece of information, it has like, huge consequences. [SPEAKER_04]: She was very funny. [SPEAKER_04]: Also, I realized that I just, in my impression of the sister, I think I actually was doing Rocky. [SPEAKER_04]: And I don't think the sister said is joke.

[SPEAKER_04]: I think Rocky said is joke.

[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think the sister said is joke. [SPEAKER_01]: No, I think she went, it's a joke. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm imagining her doing Rocky is joke.

[SPEAKER_04]: Same thing. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so it's a month later, oh my god. [SPEAKER_04]: Also, there's a mini pig in two scenes. [SPEAKER_04]: Love to him. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I was, I immediately thought of you when I was like, any pig this movie is for Emily. [SPEAKER_04]: And that was funny that the mini pig had a little harness on both times, like I guess to show it was a pet, but like it wasn't attached to a lease, a leash. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you could have not been wearing the harness at all.

[SPEAKER_04]: I'd bring a little collar, that would have been cute. [SPEAKER_01]: I did like when we first see the mini-pig and Anna bends down and is like greeting it and then, you know, Isabella meets her and there's just the whole one line where Isabella goes, the pig likes her. [SPEAKER_01]: Such a funny burn. [SPEAKER_01]: I think this movie is so funny. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, listeners, I'm sorry, I've been struggling with a cough this whole time. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel that I just want to say, and maybe I'm just saying this so that I can cut it for a clip later, I strongly recommend this movie.

[SPEAKER_01]: I think that it is one worth supporting, [SPEAKER_01]: Um, because it going to this movie is the only way that more romcoms will be put in theaters and also, you know, not to do it like my fellow white people type of thing, but I do think like a movie poster with two black leads on it sometimes like, [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what's wrong with us, but we just like, don't think that's for us or something. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just strongly recommend this movie. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, totally fun.

[SPEAKER_01]: You're not like left out of jokes or whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, whatever the concern is that maybe it's like not for you or something because you see it's has two black leads. [SPEAKER_01]: This movie is so, so fun, and it's for everyone, and it's just like so joyful, and delightful, and I just, that's my impassioned speech to please go see this movie in theaters. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, it's, it's just a delightful time, like, I charming. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like a charm bomb. [SPEAKER_04]: I was gonna say how much I just appreciated seeing something on the big screen with like saturated colors, [SPEAKER_01]: And just it was also very fun to look at like yeah big time and it you know it kind of reminded me of the feelings I got from like [SPEAKER_01]: the the rom-com's I love my top here my top three just because I got it I got exquisite men I got exquisite men this recording by top three rom-com's my big fat Greek wedding just a blast just so fun big crazy family you've got mail Tom Hanks and Reg Migraine classic sort of a you know 90s hipster [SPEAKER_01]: classic, but also an AOL chat room classic, and you know I was in those AOL chat rooms.

[SPEAKER_01]: But my ultimate favorite is French kiss. [SPEAKER_01]: Have you ever seen that one? [SPEAKER_04]: No, I've never even heard it. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't, it's not like some indie. [SPEAKER_01]: It was in theaters. [SPEAKER_01]: It was popular. [SPEAKER_01]: There are tons of DVDs floating around. [SPEAKER_01]: But for whatever reason, it's not available to stream or buy anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't know if some rights thing happened where nobody can have access. [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen like chatter about this movie on Reddit before that people are like, why the fuck can you not access this movie?

[SPEAKER_01]: It stars Meg Ryan. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a Meg Ryan Ramcom. [SPEAKER_01]: We are. [SPEAKER_01]: It's Meg Ryan and Kevin Klein is the lead and the premise is Meg Ryan is an American who is trying to get citizenship in Canada because she is engaged to a Canadian man. [SPEAKER_01]: And he travels to France to Paris for [SPEAKER_01]: something to a question mark don't remember why he goes there and meets a Parisian woman and falls in love and she goes he like leaves or he calls her and breaks up with her over the phone says I'm not coming back and then she chases him to Paris and meets Kevin Klein who I believe is a pick

[SPEAKER_01]: But they proceed to like have adventures and fall in love while she's chasing after her fiance and there's like, you know, this whole through line about like how mysterious and sexy French women are and how it's kind of not real and like that they're just pouting and tricking you and Meg Ryan can't access those skills and it's just so it's like the perfect similar to this, the perfect like [SPEAKER_01]: European romp suspension of disbelief like there's a lot more reality in that one like bad stuff happens But it's not like gritty or realistic.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of like the real-world seeps in yeah It's so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: I love it so much and I'm playing it someone put it on streaming somewhere please. [SPEAKER_01]: I can't find it I [SPEAKER_04]: I was having a hard time thinking of my favorite rom coms because I feel like for some reason they stick with me as much and then like I enjoy them when I'm watching them, but I never seek them out and I think it's like [SPEAKER_04]: The really just like bubble gum like candy fun ones, I think I just don't seek out, but I enjoy what I'm seeing them.

[SPEAKER_04]: Then the ones that might actually get to me, I think I'm almost like scared of because I'm like, I'm like, oh, sometimes when I'm watching them now, I'm like, oh no, that'll never happen to me. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh no, never have that! [SPEAKER_04]: Oh no, but I, yeah, I guess I would put my big factory wedding because it's just so fun. [SPEAKER_04]: It's just so fun. [SPEAKER_04]: It's just so funny and fun. [SPEAKER_04]: And then I, I've only seen it like twice and I saw it pretty late, but like I did really like when Harry meant to Ali when I saw it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a, that's a perfect one. [SPEAKER_04]: And now when did really get me where I did find it like very romantic. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's like the blueprint for like the good romantic comedy. [SPEAKER_04]: I haven't seen it in so long, but I remember, I think I really like, and I'm sure I would still like, and if I rewatched it, like, 10 things I hate about you. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I've ever watched that one. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, Heath Ledger is just so like a luck check.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've certainly seen clips of him in it. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he's just so charming and like, because I definitely watched the most rom-coms and the time of year where I will just watch any fucking rom-com that's put in front of me is Christmas. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think it's because of that, like, comfort factor where it's like, it just goes with the vibe of Christmas. [SPEAKER_04]: So like, I will watch any Christmas romcom. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, the only one I can remember in recent times thinking was like weirdly randomly, good was something from Tiffany's.

[SPEAKER_04]: like an Amazon original, but like it was like that one I thought was weirdly good. [SPEAKER_04]: I love that. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was like better than it had a right to be. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, what you were just talking about made something click for me that has never clicked before, which is that did the entire machine of rom-com production shift to Christmas rom-coms only? [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: because a fuck ton of those come out every year.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't like them. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's like, I will watch the ones that are actually good that like people point out are actually good. [SPEAKER_01]: But so many of them are intentionally bad. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: In a way that I'm like, [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like stuff that is intentionally bad is like a real source spot for me because I'm just like, but you could just make it good. [SPEAKER_01]: If you were like a way of what makes something bad, you could just make something good.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like hot frosty. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that sent me into like. [SPEAKER_01]: a depressive episode at how popular it was. [SPEAKER_01]: And then how terrible it was. [SPEAKER_01]: And so many talented people were in it. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, what the fuck is this? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Because if they just made like one actually pretty good one for every three bad ones. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I can say that would there was also another [SPEAKER_04]: this one I feel more ashamed saying I thought was weirdly kind of good than like something from Tiffany's because I think more people agree that something from Tiffany's was like kind of good but this one is just like cheesy ass like hallmark but I think it was made by Netflix it's called like a built more Christmas or something and like this woman that house in Asheville [SPEAKER_04]: Somehow, she's at the hotel, and then she goes back in time.

[SPEAKER_04]: She gets put back in time into a movie that was shot there. [SPEAKER_04]: And falls in love with the lead. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's kind of weird, but I was kind of surprised by how not that was. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that I think that can happen like sometimes those it's just interesting that those that the entire it does feel to me like 90% of the romcom production. [SPEAKER_01]: of the last like five years or so has shifted to Christmas. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, when, which is weird because it feels like like this, the summer rom-com is also such a genre, but it's a genre that's like been neglected.

[SPEAKER_04]: But it's like the sun-drenched, [SPEAKER_04]: location rom-com, which I guess a lot of people consider the mom and me as rom-coms, which I guess I ask you if you consider those rom-coms. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never seen them. [SPEAKER_04]: I guess they kind of technically are because in the first one it's between Donna and the the guy, where's then Amanda Cyphery does like already has her guy and then in the second one [SPEAKER_04]: There's like, it goes back to young Donna, and she's essentially in like a rom-com kind of.

[SPEAKER_04]: So like, I guess never really thought of those and as rom-coms, if they are, they're two of my top three. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I mean, that's, I, there my favorites, but maybe I was thinking of rom-coms to narrowly or something, where I was like, oh my favorite rom-com has to be rom-coms where the love story I think is really good and maybe that's why I didn't think of like my big fat Greek wedding, because it's like, I don't love that movie because I think like their story is so romantic or it touches me or anything.

[SPEAKER_04]: But I'm right. [SPEAKER_04]: I think if we expand it to like, no, just like rom-coms and you just like the movie, that's a much bigger pool for me to, yeah, full from, yeah, that makes sense. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, listen, put more romcoms and theaters, stop dropping them on just streaming. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, because I think you're so right about like people we meet on vacation. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, and I know you read the book, right? [SPEAKER_04]: You read Emily Henry books. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've read a lot of them, but I don't think I've, I think there are a few I have missed, but you know, I find her books to be completely unchallenging and fun, you know, it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: If I read something that put me in a slump, she's one of the writers, I know I can go to to like fix it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_04]: Turn the shit back around. [SPEAKER_04]: Because like I kind of liked it. [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't love it, but like I do think that the I do think the friends who for some reason just never quite get together and then eventually do. [SPEAKER_04]: I do seem to like a lot. [SPEAKER_04]: Like that's what plus one is that I watched last night again. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and that feels true or to life, then anything like, yeah, people you've paid. [SPEAKER_01]: Becoming someone, you know.

[SPEAKER_01]: I just dive and not experience much enemies to lovers stuff in the real world. [SPEAKER_04]: That would be, but someone was really mean to me. [SPEAKER_04]: I think I would have a hard time like forgetting about that, you know? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Like if there was a guy who's like first instinct was to be really rude to me, I think like, [SPEAKER_04]: I would just like, remember that sometimes and be like, oh, I don't, I don't like that this guy has this capacity to be mean to me.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is like sort of revealing about him. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, definitely. [SPEAKER_01]: And I just think I would have, I didn't like people that we meet on vacation, and I think I would have in theaters. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, and I think that's just a big problem I have that like, [SPEAKER_01]: If I'm watching a streaming movie, it has got such an uphill battle. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, just when I am inside my house, I'm like, my heart is not open. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never been to open to what the movie is doing.

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's everything is so about how it's presented. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, you know, when like, they'll do those tests where they put like a grocery store, like boxed wine against like a fancy wine and try to like the wine people. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like all about the presentation or whatever. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: That's how it is with movies too, it's like, if you're giving it to people on a platter in the room where it's like, it's all about the movie. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, we all came here to watch this movie, of course, you're gonna feel more strongly about it than if you just are like scrolling Netflix and just like, okay, I guess I'll try this while you're on your phone.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not even being like a film bro about it. [SPEAKER_01]: We're saying like, you know, I think that some people are like, oh, I just prefer for something to come out on streaming. [SPEAKER_01]: I just like, you know, I don't want to leave my house. [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the reason is, I think it's fine if that's the way people feel. [SPEAKER_01]: But I do think like, [SPEAKER_01]: The movies that I have memories of that I attach like emotional connection to, I've never watched one at home where that happened.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's only in theaters that I really have that experience and so [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why Rob Combs can't make it into theaters, but like I'm not going to be seeing Colleen Hoover movies. [SPEAKER_01]: So in terms of like women's entertainment, like they're missing a huge segment of the population who's like never going to give a fuck about a Colleen Hoover, you know, a peace narrative movie. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's also like it has to do a [SPEAKER_04]: It's sort of like what's what chicken egg situation, where it's like, if the only movies that people think you go to the theater to see are like the big, serious event movies, that's not, that's not how theaters like survive.

[SPEAKER_04]: Theater survive by it being like, [SPEAKER_04]: and activity where you're just like, oh, it's just like, go see that like fun new movie, that'll be fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that it becomes like a regular rotation in your life. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not just like something you do three times a year from when Marvel releases something or whatever. [SPEAKER_04]: And I get that like ticket prices are really high and stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: But I'm like, yeah, I see stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: This is a really good deal or like it is a really good deal.

[SPEAKER_04]: There's like and half price tickets all the time. [SPEAKER_04]: If you don't have, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I just, I like that with rom-coms, [SPEAKER_04]: in activity for people and not just like, oh, people like us who wanna see everything so that we know the conversation and so we'll just go see everything in theaters. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, that's not most people, but I like rom-com's just bringing out like, yeah, like a group of friends being like, what should we do? [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, let's go see the rom-com and like get drinks.

[SPEAKER_01]: Literally, and like the friend that I had a friend come with me to see you me in Tuscany, and it's a friend that I haven't had that much one-on-one hang time with that was able to come and like said like, oh, I'm happy to be your rom-com buddy. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know what I mean? [SPEAKER_01]: It's just like, there are people who want to do this, and it is like a fun communal experience, and I just, I want, you know, I mean, it's like half the reason we're doing the podcast is like, [SPEAKER_01]: We're excited about movies and it's fun to like convince the people around us to reinvest back into this thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: This ecosystem that exists for us to feel communal with each other and make real memories of like around media that is fun that we love.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's our impassioned speech about

[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's it. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, guys, you have to go see this movie in theaters, please. [SPEAKER_01]: We need them to release more. [SPEAKER_04]: We need, we need at least like a rom-com in theaters a month, I think. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes. [SPEAKER_04]: Wood-brain. [SPEAKER_04]: It's like the theater. [SPEAKER_04]: There needs to be that cycle again. [SPEAKER_04]: Ecosystem is [SPEAKER_04]: kind of just a little dead and to be a healthy ecosystem, you need to have everything.
