[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god [SPEAKER_00]: Where are they and you said they're coming leave me alone leave me alone they're on their way that is exactly the energy And believe Exactly what the vibe was so yes double double the amount of episodes this week because we have to give you our Oscar takes of the Oscars were last night [SPEAKER_00]: Emily, what did you think of the Oscar's broadcast?
[SPEAKER_01]: I look, nothing that thrilling happened. [SPEAKER_01]: Sure. [SPEAKER_01]: Would you agree? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I would agree that it had a pretty peaceful vibe because there was no Oscar enemy this year, really. [SPEAKER_00]: I had a personal one. [SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't rooting for that one several times. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was already a sign we'll get into it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think Cohen in is the best possible host. [SPEAKER_01]: I think he should host every single year forever. [SPEAKER_01]: I felt like the crowd was like being tough. [SPEAKER_01]: Like
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I think that, you know, a few weeks into a war is a weird time for an Oscar show and I felt that energy a little bit like Conan even having us in sear moment in the beginning. [SPEAKER_00]: I also. [SPEAKER_00]: Something I really liked about the broadcast overall before we get into categories or whatever, is that it was incredibly shaggy. [SPEAKER_00]: It looks like kind of a mess. [SPEAKER_01]: I am. [SPEAKER_01]: It's so funny when it's like these are these are all like our best actors and the supposedly the most like charismatic like you know screen ready people.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone when they present and are up there is the most awkward anybody has ever been in front of a camera. [SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that, I think there were a few people that used it in a way that was advantageous. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I thought, Kumeil is good at harnessing awkwardness on stage, and just from years of seeing him doing stand-up in person, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like, we kind of already knew that about him, but like he was pretty good though.
[SPEAKER_00]: He seemed genuinely mad at Conan's joke, which was funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the Bridesmaid's people, I thought, were good with the exception of the fact that, you know, I feel like those wireless mics have to be like, like so sensitive that when it's an ensemble, like joke thing happening on the stage, it is like the timing is awful and it sounds weird, but that is like a production issue. [SPEAKER_01]: That was good though, I did laugh. [SPEAKER_01]: at some of those jokes. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was fun because like the past few weeks, Conan has been just like dropping in at like all these like small shows around LA to like try Oscar jokes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was like [SPEAKER_01]: a fun thing and I saw him at one and it was fun to be like, oh yeah, he did that joke. [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't do that joke. [SPEAKER_01]: He did that joke. [SPEAKER_00]: He didn't do that joke. [SPEAKER_00]: He didn't do that joke. [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't do that joke. [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't do that joke. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And he, at the show, he, because he's like, [SPEAKER_01]: it's so crazy how perfect and charming he is that like any caliber of show like these just small weird little shows he's perfect yeah and he was like okay so all the jokes you laughed at those are gonna get nothing and the ones you thought were corny and bad those are the only ones that are gonna get laughs in the room it was kind of true [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's so funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: I something I would like walked away from the night with was that like every time they cut to Leonardo to Caprio for a bit, he, he wasn't ready. [SPEAKER_00]: He didn't seem ready to do the bit with anybody. [SPEAKER_00]: And I feel maybe we don't ask him to improvise. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we just, he's scripted man and we'd be a scripted man. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the mustache is nice, he and he doesn't really... [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't look like he's been drinking non-stop, which is usually what he looks like.
[SPEAKER_00]: That everyone has played. [SPEAKER_00]: You're diet. [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone has been like, he deflated his head for the Oscars and it's true. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's nice. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad. [SPEAKER_00]: I hope he's in a healthier place. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you see that kitten in Australia that was born with like, blown up like a balloon? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: And they had to deflate it. [SPEAKER_02]: That's Leo.
[SPEAKER_02]: Leo got deflated.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't help but feel kind of like, I don't know, Leo. [SPEAKER_00]: I always feel worried about Leo. [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he was a child actor in a bad time to be one and he it broke his [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I did like Stella and I thought Stella and Skars guard an L fanning during the Bridesmaids bit. [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to one of my favorite little L fanning is so funny. [SPEAKER_01]: I just love her. [SPEAKER_01]: She seems so fun. [SPEAKER_01]: Her endocode just seemed like a good time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and, you know, yeah, it's nice. [SPEAKER_00]: It's nice to see sisters that just seem like nice and fun. [SPEAKER_00]: They really do. [SPEAKER_01]: I did also. [SPEAKER_01]: I liked when Conan was yelling at Grogu to clap.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have any feelings about Grogu but I like the idea of yelling in him because he can't physically do something Yeah, that was that felt like a perfect Conan bit to which was nice like that and the [SPEAKER_00]: operatic. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I would do if I wanted to ask her thing in the beginning. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, just happy to see some true, true weird Conan bits. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And the intro and that, that end cap, were Scott Gardner, who does podcast the ride.
[SPEAKER_01]: He directed those. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, cool. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Those were great. [SPEAKER_00]: I was sitting with people who didn't watch most of the movies. [SPEAKER_00]: They just were sort of there for the vibes. [SPEAKER_00]: And so, um, when that end thing played, they were like, oh, look, I really dark. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, that's how I went battle after another end. [SPEAKER_00]: You're like, that's the way. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, oh, okay, that makes more sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just thought I was like twisted. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, just, I came up with that. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like an end-cone and just like dies, just for fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess you're placed by Mr. [SPEAKER_00]: Beast. [SPEAKER_01]: I do imagine some times that watching the Oscars when you haven't seen most of the movies, there must be moments where it's wildly confused. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, I think that's the, [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the most common experience of the Oscars, and perhaps that's why they struggle to get viewers, and I'm not saying I mean it's like, I just wish people went to the movies more.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there will be some more movies. [SPEAKER_00]: The Oscars essentially have the same problem movie theaters have, which is funny. [SPEAKER_00]: There's not enough, it's like they feed each other. [SPEAKER_00]: And if there's not enough viewers for one, there's obviously not going to be enough viewers for the other. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, very interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, this is the first Oscars I've watched. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a full award show I've watched in like 10 years.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, really? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, after I left my job at KCRW and where I had to live tweet award shows, I stopped, I was like, I'm done, like, I don't care for her. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I gave myself a 10 year break. [SPEAKER_00]: And now I'm back. [SPEAKER_00]: And I won't create a situation where I have to live tweet a word shows. [SPEAKER_00]: So please listeners of this never expect that from this show. [SPEAKER_01]: I always watch them and [SPEAKER_01]: most of the time like, and I even like get excited for them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I love watching them. [SPEAKER_01]: And the most of the time I'm like, oh, this is a bit of a slog, but I see every type of, always watch them all. [SPEAKER_01]: I like forget every time that I'm like, [SPEAKER_00]: it's so long. [SPEAKER_00]: Even last night, you know, it was like we had hit the third hour and I was, I just felt like voicing like, okay, well, just another hour to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I was also watching alone, which is like, especially boring. [SPEAKER_00]: It does change the experience of it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is the most fun I've had watching in like a really long time. [SPEAKER_00]: I would watch it when I lied to me did there were times where I would watch it alone at at the office by myself on a computer. [SPEAKER_01]: or some reason. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh no, I think one time I came in met you at your office and you had to like, like, live tweeted debate or something awful.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because I also used to be allowed to order like $100 worth of dinner or something.
[SPEAKER_00]: I see. [SPEAKER_00]: So, he's in fight people.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I, I enjoyed, I had a lot of fun watching it with people. [SPEAKER_00]: I think the, the shagginess of the ceremony was like, I'm being part of what made it fun to watch with people, because there were definitely moments where we were like screaming, like, for example, I know, I didn't write down what a word this was fun, but when they started to lower the microphone, [SPEAKER_00]: on that guy and they cut to Conan who wouldn't budge, who clearly knew they had cut to him and was like, yeah, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they let the guy finish the speech, go back to Conan and he's like lowering the mic while the man is still talking is very funny. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really fun. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like one of the best parts of the night to me. [SPEAKER_00]: um, I really really loved that. [SPEAKER_00]: In general, I felt like there was only one group. [SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe the Kpop demon hunters, strong people. [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't let one of them talk, but otherwise, I felt like nobody listened to the sound, the music getting turned up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it was through it and then they turned the music back. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it seemed like most of the time that worked. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like, well, if you just keep talking, and it's like, I'm kind of like, it should be just let them talk. [SPEAKER_01]: They're never going to be up here again. [SPEAKER_01]: Let them talk. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I had a real nervousness though, specifically when [SPEAKER_00]: when um documentary short went up and it was all the empty rooms that one um and i saw the group that was standing up there and i saw the woman and i saw that she had a big button on and i was like oh my god that's a parent you have to let her talk first because they cannot play her off [SPEAKER_01]: because the crazy part is, it's like, they totally would play her off.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're so, they are so hard core about that, that it's like, they would and that would be insane. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't watch last year, I know that Adrian Brody gave like the longest speech in history, but did they try to play him off?
[SPEAKER_00]: I think so. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't remember. [SPEAKER_00]: They're not as tight. [SPEAKER_00]: I noticed that they're not as tight with the like once it gets to director actor actress picture right when they get into that stretch they like really loosen up.
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I wondered if he got played. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember, but it was so long that it feels like. [SPEAKER_01]: they must have tried at one point and then maybe he was just like, no, no. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let me, I mean, what do you do? [SPEAKER_00]: If they, you know, it's interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: Lots of cussing on stage. [SPEAKER_00]: That feels pretty normal. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't 10 years ago, I guess. [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like the last time I watched that maybe happened once or twice, but it was like, [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of times, and I guess they just have to bleep it, but I was like, this is streaming, who cares?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just one feed probably is all it is. [SPEAKER_01]: So like, right, I wonder if when it goes to YouTube if they won't have [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, are you allowed to curse on YouTube? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I did think too excited. [SPEAKER_01]: I did think that the Jane Lynch YouTube, from her, that was funny. [SPEAKER_01]: Like that was legitimately funny. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a good bit. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a really good bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: I even thought I think it was maybe not executed to perfection, but the second screen, [SPEAKER_01]: And I just love Sterling K-Brown so much. [SPEAKER_01]: He's great. [SPEAKER_01]: I just will watch anything that he's in. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was a big, this is us head, and I'm a big paradise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so you really, you're sticking with him in his career. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Apparently, this is actually really good. [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone should watch it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I actually intend to, because I know it's like an apocalypse thing, and that I love the apocalypse things.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, so you, I think, I was just going to say that I think we both are almost all of the like main movies. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I were on first off. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: What did you miss? [SPEAKER_01]: I have still not seen the secret agent. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I will. [SPEAKER_00]: Is that it?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's impressive. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean three, I think I missed which are yours. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I've seen all the best pictures of what, the best picture ones. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I haven't seen like the foreign, the, the documentary is like I, that I haven't seen pretty much. [SPEAKER_00]: And I covered a lot of that. [SPEAKER_00]: I saw all of the foreign ones except for the voice of Hindra job. [SPEAKER_00]: I just didn't think I could handle it because I know the story.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's just too sad. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but I wish them much success and would have loved if they won. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I didn't see song sung blue, which I knew had sung was up for. [SPEAKER_00]: I watched that the other night, I watched in the like week up to the Oscars, you know, I had to pick something to to catch up on and I chose blue moon. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: needed it so much really and I was like crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: The hype is crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's beautifully acted. [SPEAKER_00]: He did an amazing job. [SPEAKER_00]: He really, I mean, it's like essentially like a almost like a one man play, but it is the only catastrophically unpleasant character. [SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't stand hanging out with this guy for an hour and a half. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's also the movie that no offense to her, but made me tap out on Margaret Wally. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I actually don't know if I think she's good. [SPEAKER_01]: I really felt like that after seeing how to make a killing a few weeks ago.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, that's because she's so pretty, so pretty, but that movie, [SPEAKER_01]: I just went yikeside, I don't know if I think she is cut out for this, yeah, and, you know, I know you didn't see it, so I'm not going to talk too long about Blue Moon, but, uh, I'm on this like obsessed with Blue Moon's. [SPEAKER_00]: That's so funny. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's like, you know, it's people in a bought in sardies in New York after the opening of Oklahoma, so it's very like, [SPEAKER_00]: It's very mom friendly, but so Margaret Kwalee in that movie, you know, is playing like this woman that this this songwriter is obsessed with and like has like intense affection for and it's like set in this time, this like old-timey, she's doing just like classic old-timey, [SPEAKER_01]: That's she loves doing that for everything and I think that's kind of the problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: She loves doing a voice. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but like she's not very good at it. [SPEAKER_01]: But she always insists on doing a voice. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know that I think she's not good at the voice. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just that in this movie. [SPEAKER_00]: It makes that character into like a comic book version of what that character should be like, and I was like, man, if you would have just put like Literally anyone else in this role, it would have had a little bit more humanity.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and so I just found it so off putting, but I can totally see I watched Blue Moon and it was like, okay, I get why he, why Ethan Hawke is nominated for this, like it's very impressive. [SPEAKER_00]: He's, he is speaking essentially the entire movie. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no scene where he's not talking. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like on his knees or something. [SPEAKER_00]: Something like that. [SPEAKER_00]: He, they have him at, we were trying to figure it out without Googling it. [SPEAKER_00]: We just sort of were like, I bother sizing that maybe they, I was like, maybe they put like tracks in the ground where he's like lower than everybody else.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when he's walking around with people, because he looks like he's walking naturally. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's, uh, [SPEAKER_00]: but he's, yeah, he's supposed to be tiny. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like much shorter than um, Andrew Scott in that. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's a tiny, man. [SPEAKER_00]: Famously as long.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I didn't see blue moon or I saw blue moon, didn't see song sung blue, didn't see him or job, and then I didn't see like some of the, I didn't see most of the documentary. [SPEAKER_00]: I only watched
[SPEAKER_00]: the Netflix one about the stand-to-ground laws, perfect neighbor, but I didn't watch any of the other ones. [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't watch any of the animated ones because I don't like watching animated movies.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I even saw the short films, and I watched the short docks. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, yeah, I was dedicated to the cause this year. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did not do my homework. [SPEAKER_01]: I like very much was just trying to get in as many of the best picture ones as I could, just so at least I could have that covered. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I watched songs on Blue, [SPEAKER_01]: Oddly touching. [SPEAKER_01]: I liked it. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I've heard about that one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but yeah, there wasn't like Okay, let's let's talk about Frankenstein and how one of them just though. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so listen [SPEAKER_00]: I'm okay with Frankenstein winning, what did it win? [SPEAKER_00]: I should have these up in front of me. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of being a very unprofessional podcast if I not. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it won't. [SPEAKER_01]: Here and make up. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the, that is the win that really pushed me over the edge.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the first win I got. [SPEAKER_00]: I think, I'm pretty sure it won costume. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I think the first win was costume then it was here and make up and then it was like production design. [SPEAKER_00]: Production design.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, okay, costume, I, I get it. [SPEAKER_00]: That it was, it was beautiful. [SPEAKER_00]: They were beautiful dresses on Miyagawa. [SPEAKER_00]: And then production design, I can also get because I know those were all practical sets. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was very, yeah, impressive looking. [SPEAKER_00]: Especially the boat. [SPEAKER_00]: I remember seeing like behind the scenes photos of the boat in Frankenstein, where they like built this boat, they just fully built [SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like I saw pictures of like the house like they built like a miniature to scale for like that stuff is all cool like production design can't begrudge it that totally so those two I'm fine with but when they got to make up and they were like showing the nominees and they showed Frankenstein I jokingly was like if this wins I'll kill myself [SPEAKER_00]: I truly did not believe for a second that I thought for sure sinners would win this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I think people are kind of the creature designed in Frankenstein so bad. [SPEAKER_00]: It's awful. [SPEAKER_01]: I literally think that people are just kind of stupid, and if they see that something is Frankenstein, they're just like, this is probably the best makeup.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was so fascinating. [SPEAKER_00]: And I know I wish nothing but nice things for Guillermo Del Toro, who seems like genuinely wonderful and hard words. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm happy that his movie, like, you know, I know that he really cared about making a Frankenstein movie. [SPEAKER_00]: So like narratively, I'm like, okay, I guess that's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: But [SPEAKER_00]: Really, I hated the creature design of Frankenstein so much. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was so poorly done, I thought it looked like I made it with eyeliner and I shadow I've said it a million times.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it was really, it really made me bitter when it won. [SPEAKER_01]: It's I genuinely do like quite a few of his movies. [SPEAKER_01]: I love Crimson Peak. [SPEAKER_01]: I really am interested in everything he does, but I saw I saw it once I was somebody being like he's the only person where it's like I need to separate the art from the artist and the other direction [SPEAKER_01]: because he's like so cute and sweet and seem so great. [SPEAKER_01]: That's sometimes the movies are lost.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I'm so happy to support him, but I don't like this stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, why does he keep only wanting to tell essentially the Frankenstein story in every movie? [SPEAKER_01]: I know, and it's like, I really do like, I'm like, he'd have that like Netflix anthology that he produced. [SPEAKER_01]: That was, yeah, really mostly a flop. [SPEAKER_01]: It was, but he's so cute. [SPEAKER_00]: Woo hoo! [SPEAKER_00]: It seems so lovely. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't like that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so, you know, Frankenstein, winning makeup was my only villain of the night.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything else I was kind of like, it's yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It felt like everything was, most categories were like, one battle after another versus sinners? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: I like them both. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they're both really good. [SPEAKER_01]: I like sinners a lot better. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Just in terms of enjoying it. [SPEAKER_01]: I like that's the one I saw in theaters twice because I enjoyed watching it so much. [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to watch it again on a big screen where one battle after the I liked, but I didn't really feel like watching it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: been a big PTA head. [SPEAKER_00]: I just, he's, he's moved, for some reason have never stuck with me the way they do with quite literally everyone else who enjoys cinema. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what that's about, but I like them every time I see him. [SPEAKER_00]: They just, like, it's, if one battle after another didn't stay in the discourse in the way it did, I would not have thought about it again. [SPEAKER_00]: OK. Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yeah, it was cool. [SPEAKER_00]: I had fun while I was watching it, but I [SPEAKER_00]: mean that much to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was fine. [SPEAKER_00]: The sinner is I'm almost terrified to talk about. [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're listening or watching this, I need you to take some deep breaths with me and hold my hand.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't. [SPEAKER_01]: like like sinners and it's not that I feel like that's not it's not your genre like you don't like that genre so that makes sense to me [SPEAKER_00]: So it's interesting, I mean, one thing is that when I watch sinners, I think I texted you, I maybe texted a few people to be like, this is, am I crazy? [SPEAKER_00]: This wasn't that good. [SPEAKER_00]: And then it was clear immediately that I'm the only one feeling like this, who isn't also racist. [SPEAKER_00]: Like racist people feel this way and I'm not them.
[SPEAKER_00]: But for me, sinners, I don't like horror. [SPEAKER_00]: I love the setting and I loved the music, but the performances were really over the top to me. [SPEAKER_00]: Like the haily-stined-filled character, I was like, is this book in for real? [SPEAKER_00]: Like there was just, it was all too much and what it felt like by the end while I was watching it was like, I think this is a movie. [SPEAKER_00]: That is like using cultural references and touchpoints in a way that is resonating with a lot of people.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's good for them. [SPEAKER_00]: And it is just not reflecting my personal cultural experience and not everything has to. [SPEAKER_00]: So I like never said online or something, but like I just was like, okay, like it's none of my business that I didn't like. [SPEAKER_00]: But as the year has gone on, I mean, I feel that I feel the same way about Ryan Kougler, but I do about Guillermo del Toro where I'm like, I love him. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that he seems, he's so full.
[SPEAKER_01]: He seems like the sweetest man alive. [SPEAKER_01]: It's insane. [SPEAKER_00]: he's like very sweet and like so thoughtful and really, really smart and like I think everything he did with sinners is like incredible and it just like didn't resonate with me but going into the Oscars last night I was like I would be fine if this if it won everything because I understand what it meant to people I understand what it like I think all of that stuff is [SPEAKER_00]: the most best-case scenario for both camps of like fanboys, where PTA finally got his Oscars.
[SPEAKER_00]: I loved that he went up there and was like, you really make a guy wear card for one of these?
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but Ryan coogler still got to he got his win. [SPEAKER_00]: He still got to go up there and make a speech. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, the cinematographer, autumn got to go up and win. [SPEAKER_01]: And that was when when when he grabbed her kid. [SPEAKER_01]: That was so cute. [SPEAKER_00]: It just was so sweet. [SPEAKER_00]: And I. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, sinners not working for me is doesn't mean that I'm not like super supportive of what he creates and has created with it. [SPEAKER_00]: So I, you know, was just doing doing my service of staying as quiet as possible during the season.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that since sinners was out, I think a lot of people have, I don't want to say turned on it, but I think there are a lot more people are just kind of like, it's like not that good, that's just like not that good, you know, or I, I feel like I'm the lead up to the Oscars people were like, [SPEAKER_01]: Michael B. Jordan was actively bad in it, et cetera. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I didn't, I don't feel like it's, I thought he was fine in it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just really loved it. [SPEAKER_01]: I loved how it looked. [SPEAKER_01]: I loved the music. [SPEAKER_01]: I love, I love anything like Southern Gothic. [SPEAKER_01]: I, I liked the character. [SPEAKER_01]: I just liked everything about it, but yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you know, it's it is an interesting experience to feel like you have the unpopular opinion and feel kind of guilty about it. [SPEAKER_00]: Actually, guilty about it, basically all year. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I'm sorry.
[SPEAKER_00]: Any time it would come up, I'm like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: See it, actually. [SPEAKER_00]: It had when I was watching it while I was watching it, not to like, [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not trying to beat up on it. [SPEAKER_00]: But it felt like a TBS movie to me. [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: There's something about like a TBS afternoon action movie is what it felt like. [SPEAKER_00]: Something about the way the music would swell as the sun's coming up. [SPEAKER_00]: And Michael B. Jordan's outside with a gun.
[SPEAKER_00]: There were just things that it felt like it was referencing that are not things I'm interested in. [SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, he did say, [SPEAKER_01]: God, what were like, one of his reference points when he was making this movie was put some boots, the last wish, and I think the other one was the luck of the Irish, which if I remember correctly, I watched it all the time, was a Disney channel original. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that is a TV, but it's so funny because with after I saw it, I remember one of the first thoughts I had was I was like That's a movie like that's a big big movie, so it's like was the opposite of like a TV movie to me But I'm glad it won some things and I have absolutely zero complaints about like [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, I wish that Sean Peden hadn't won just because like, he sucks and is a bad man.
[SPEAKER_00]: It also wasn't even there, but like, he just seems really unpleasant. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, awful. [SPEAKER_00]: But like, I did like that performance, the Sean Peden performance. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was good. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, even when he won, I was like, [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and, you know, everyone in the room was like, he was good. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, no, I know. [SPEAKER_00]: He just just, yeah, that's it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I wish in one, but it's just funny people being like, I wish he had one, because also he was bad.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, I don't need to lie to ourselves. [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't bad in it. [SPEAKER_01]: He just is a bad man that we all hate. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And it would have been cool if is that that was the category of Del marry Linda. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought that that that was the narrative. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought was like the most meaningful in terms of the word road to an award. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I do think it's funny. [SPEAKER_01]: Just like I don't necessarily think I have no I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I loved weapons. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't really have any feelings about Amy Madigan winning. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I liked her in it, but it was shocked. [SPEAKER_01]: I only wasn't because I feel like people have been anticipating that or whatever, but I think it's kind of funny how everyone has been like, oh, the Oscars just lives giving out like pity Oscars and like legacy Oscars and it's like, this isn't a legacy Oscar. [SPEAKER_01]: She's just an older woman. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Like a legacy Oscar is like Glenn's with someone who's been nominated a million times and, you know, his never won.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, here you can have it and it's like, just, she says, older woman doesn't show me here. [SPEAKER_01]: Me and... [SPEAKER_01]: that I don't know, but it's just like, she's all, they did this out of pity. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: I also wondered if the other four, like the other groupings just split the votes. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, because it wasn't two people from sentimental value was like L fanning and hip-sa. [SPEAKER_00]: Yips, yips, yips, yips, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip,
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just never going to try to pronounce those names. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just, I, when Amy mannequin one, I was like, oh, I wonder if the votes got kind of split, like, evenly among the rest. [SPEAKER_01]: Super, yeah, because it was too sentimental value, but then also one battle versus sinners. [SPEAKER_01]: So that could have easily split. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the other half of the vote. [SPEAKER_01]: And leaving, leaving Amy on top. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and congrats. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Amy seemed shocked that she wanted to be honest and she had a kind of goofy little speech, which was fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I didn't, I, I, you didn't like sentimental value. [SPEAKER_00]: Is that correct? [SPEAKER_00]: Not to, not to hold you at gunpoint to your opinion. [SPEAKER_01]: But oh my god. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's two guns. [SPEAKER_01]: I deserve it. [SPEAKER_01]: One for each, one for each daughter with daddy issues on the movie. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, it's just something really do anything for me. [SPEAKER_01]: Like I didn't think it was bad. [SPEAKER_01]: I just like, I, I watched it and I, [SPEAKER_01]: I felt nothing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think most of the time I think, to me, I'm like, that's a movie that, like, [SPEAKER_01]: not to generalize, but I think it's like, if it moves you, you're really into it. [SPEAKER_01]: If it's not something that connects with you personally and moves you, you're just, it's not going to do much for you elsewhere. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's not, there's not something else that I was able to like grab on to and be like, I loved that part of it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I think most people who love it are like, [SPEAKER_01]: have a weird relationship with their dad, sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I liked it. [SPEAKER_00]: I liked it. [SPEAKER_00]: Fine. [SPEAKER_00]: But I was genuinely shocked that it would won.
[SPEAKER_00]: What it won for. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the stuff it was up against. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was just so much more interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought it was because it's like, I feel like it winning that category bad optics in general, I know I was like, oh, the only movie with a bunch of horrible optics. [SPEAKER_01]: but the only reason it made sense to me is because I feel like with foreign film if there's a pretty mainstream movie that just happens to be a foreign film that always wins because that's probably the only one most of those people have seen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I also found myself questioning why movies are allowed to go into the best picture category if they are also in best foreign film because secret agent and sentimental value were in both. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, this seems unfair. [SPEAKER_01]: And it does. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's like don't have these other foreign films up against something that's like, also best picture obviously that's what people are going to vote for. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that was strange.
[SPEAKER_01]: Were there any movies you saw where like, were there anything, was there anything that you really think should have been nominated that you saw in the choice? [SPEAKER_01]: No other choice. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, hammered for some. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what everyone is saying is, was like my favorite movie of last year. [SPEAKER_00]: I have thought about it so much since then, I had so much fun watching it, but I found it to have the right amount of humor and depth and weirdness and compelling visuals that we're really striking.
[SPEAKER_00]: I listen to the song all the time from the movie. [SPEAKER_00]: It just like, it warmed its way deeper into my life. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that other stuff did. [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think I have anything else that really felt I felt that strongly about out of the best picture nominees, the secret agent was my choice because it's the only movie that I kept thinking about and like kept going back to in just like reading about and I don't know I just it was like the perfect combination of like [SPEAKER_00]: really compelling story, really sexy movie, but really interesting and has a lot of depth and taught me something and was like very just like haunting and strange.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it did get nominated for Best Picture and I'm impressed because I know Brazil is quite powerful in the voting. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I didn't know if I I hoped I had a I had the tiny is a little hope in my heart that it would win Which just may be insane fun. [SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't know that we're on the other side of it. [SPEAKER_00]: I I realize that's crazy fun when there was like a big upset though like it's exciting. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, what about you? [SPEAKER_00]: Is there anything that wasn't nominated that you like hoped would be? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I, I think it's crazy that the testament of Anne Lee wasn't nominated for anything. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, that, I loved it, but it's also like, how, how was it not costumes? [SPEAKER_01]: How was it not, best actress? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just like, I, even production design. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I, [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like it should have been in most categories.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it just was, there was nothing. [SPEAKER_01]: And I know that they totally fumbled the release of that. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know why. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, but, [SPEAKER_01]: I loved that. [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely, like, I cannot believe that Jesse Plumman wasn't nominated for Bagoña. [SPEAKER_00]: That is really shocking, because he, I mean, that was such a moving performance. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was like to me, I'm like, that was his, his movie. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I love Emma Stone, but I don't think that performance was anything that special.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was like that drastically different from a lot of other performance. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like it was good, but it was like the star of that movie was like Jesse Pumms was so good in it. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: That I was really bummed he wasn't nominated. [SPEAKER_01]: And then my real wild card that I have. [SPEAKER_01]: For god, probably like almost a year, I think it came out like early last year, but I knew it was never gonna get nominated for anything, but I have maintained that it should have been in the conversation.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm obsessed with the long walk.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I saw that movie. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. [SPEAKER_01]: I was awed by it, so crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: I love the long one book and I think it should have had some representation in the acting categories. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and potentially yes and but David Johnson especially but both of them and because they're their chemistry is like incredible. [SPEAKER_00]: or even like adapted screenplay. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't see, I mean, I saw a long walk.
[SPEAKER_00]: The long walk, the long walk.
[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't move me the way it did you, but I don't see why it wouldn't have snuck in somewhere. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it, I think in another year to be honest, it would have because I think this was like a really, [SPEAKER_01]: In movies, I kind of think it just wasn't taken seriously. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because of the premise or maybe because of it being like a Stephen King book, like everybody assumed it was like a horror and it's not at all. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like speculative fiction, but for some reason, just like, and then they're like, they're just walking, then we've got a walk.
[SPEAKER_01]: No one took it seriously, but it's so good. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't really cry at movies that much anymore because of my pros. [SPEAKER_01]: It makes it kind of hard to like, [SPEAKER_01]: actually cry. [SPEAKER_01]: I had trailers, but sometimes I like tear up, but then like, I don't know it dried up my tear glands or something, but that movie, I like legit cry that, like cried.
[SPEAKER_01]: That movie did something to me. [SPEAKER_00]: That's interesting. [SPEAKER_01]: So I, yeah, I wish that that was in the conversation. [SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if they just didn't put the money, they didn't want to campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't, like, sometimes when stuff doesn't get nominated, I think that the studio doesn't, but if it doesn't make enough money or didn't have enough buzz or whatever, they just don't believe the campaign will work and so they won't bother. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it happened it came out so early or so early in the year that they would they really would have had to bring And the campaign would have been kind of from the ground up because no one took it seriously But that's another one where the acting is like like most of the movie is just like them talking to each other And the acting is so good [SPEAKER_01]: I should have started a one woman all-skirt campaign just wearing a t-shirt around Los Angeles.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that might have worked. [SPEAKER_00]: I've not seen that before, so I don't know why it wouldn't. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure you're considering it in the long walk. [SPEAKER_01]: No, I had nothing to do with it. [SPEAKER_01]: Just a fan, just a big fan. [SPEAKER_01]: Just a huge fan. [SPEAKER_01]: Just a real believer in the cause. [SPEAKER_00]: I [SPEAKER_00]: Didn't feel that strongly about this movie personally, but I know that I felt a little surprised that Heda didn't make it into any of the categories.
[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't watched it yet. [SPEAKER_00]: I keep meaning to when the load, you know, it's good. [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't have the opportunity to see in theaters. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if it made it to theaters at all.
[SPEAKER_00]: But Tessa Thompson does give a really impressive performance in it, where, you know, it reminded me of, and I don't know if this will sell you on it, or make you not want to watch it, but [SPEAKER_00]: It reminded me a little bit of the structure of the movie The Apprentice, the Trump movie, where it start the person, like it starts as kind of a normal-ish version of a person that slowly as through the out the movie becomes sort of like, [SPEAKER_00]: grotesque is the wrong word for Heta, but kind of like definitely like more and more and more and more unhinged.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's hard to pull off. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think it was like an impressive feat of acting. [SPEAKER_00]: But they didn't even put that in theaters for a second. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so I maybe wasn't even eligible. [SPEAKER_00]: I have no idea. [SPEAKER_00]: That is more that is a more interesting arc than I assumed the movie I because I didn't actually I don't actually know what the movie is like about really It's an old Ibson play like from okay And they did the play but made it gay and and that's cool Test of Thompson gay is always fun always welcome in this house [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, it also you can see it manifest in like the the story takes place over the over a party.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she's in her like extremely put together party outfit that like slowly looks like crazier and crazier and night goes on. [SPEAKER_00]: That's fun. [SPEAKER_00]: You would enjoy it. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, not also it just seems like an Oscar movie to be honest I mean is it is is the character like an act for So anything or just like a normal. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: She's just a lady that married someone. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Because I was I was going to I for some reason I thought it was sort of like old Hollywood and it's like the Oscars love that shit.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has that like aesthetic, but it's kind of like [SPEAKER_00]: Well, 1940s or 30s like money vibes fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: I really do another reason I wish testament, apparently it was nominated for stuff is because, well, I mean, they didn't, I miss when it was kind of like, [SPEAKER_01]: Every single year without fail, they did all the songs nominated. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that they've stopped doing that. [SPEAKER_01]: Even though some of the songs suck and are Diane Warren songs, I still want them to have to do it with it. [SPEAKER_00]: This year, especially when it's like an opera song, tonight, I'm sorry.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm like, how fun would a testament of Anne Lee performance have been? [SPEAKER_00]: I think I would have been really fun, but I think it might have been a little, it could have been fun, I think, I'm 50, 50, 50 on the fun of that, I think, I think, I think Lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala, [SPEAKER_02]: That auditorium, so hard, you would have changed the energy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you have any thoughts about the K-pop demon hunters' performance? [SPEAKER_01]: So, I... [SPEAKER_01]: very genuinely hate that song and i've hated it way before i knew it was from kpop demon hunters i assumed it was just some like new young popstar because there was a period of time where i for some reason could not get my phone to connect to my car and so for about three weeks i was listening to the radio oh man every time i was in my car and [SPEAKER_01]: So I heard that song, like I'd heard it, you know, in CVS or whatever, but like I was hearing that song so much and every time I was like I hate this song so much and then finally I found out it was from Kpop Demon Hunters and that it was like the most popular song of the year and I was just like oh that song I fucking hate with all my heart.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a song for children, I feel, but, you know, I felt happy for the girls in the group, and like I, the people at our house, they had seen K-pop, it was that was one of the three movies they had seen, they had seen K-pop demon hunters and like loved it. [SPEAKER_00]: And so they told me that, I guess, like all three of the girls in the band were told that they were too old to be like K-pop performers, K-pop idols or whatever the ecosystem is, they were too old for me. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I felt emotional for them, like, oh, this is like, I don't think they probably imagined in a million years that this [SPEAKER_00]: would have been where they ended up.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's really cool for them. [SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know why you don't put that performance in the beginning of the of the broadcast. [SPEAKER_00]: Like kids are probably watching. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So that they can see that. [SPEAKER_00]: And to start with the senior centers performance was we needed that e that boost later. [SPEAKER_01]: Because also that was a much more dynamic [SPEAKER_01]: her for me and like show where the the kpop b-m-meters was pretty just straight forward ever just stand i did like watching like spielberg and still in scars guard and like going at the culture have to deal with the little lights no one knows what to do with them so they're like just everyone's just like clapping them [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I liked it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I liked that. [SPEAKER_01]: I would like to see everyone's reaction to being handed those before the performance. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, thank you. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, do I... [SPEAKER_01]: Do I have to, or go ahead and try to just put it under her seat? [SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, no, no, no, no. [SPEAKER_01]: But the Center is on a really fun. [SPEAKER_01]: I was annoyed that when Misty Copeland came out that it kept being framed as they brought her out because of Timmy's comments.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like 100% she was part of this plan a long time ago. [SPEAKER_00]: Isn't there a ballerina in the movie too? [SPEAKER_00]: Like isn't it probably? [SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's just a part, it's like the same. [SPEAKER_00]: It followed the exact structure of how it is in the movie. [SPEAKER_01]: And she's a very famous black artist. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's like, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It would be, they weren't like, oh, get her on them, it's like, no, she was definitely about lay eggs this outside of the context of Timmy's comments from 2019, like, yeah, I think that people have Timmy arrangements and drum a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone is so weird. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, you can just not like him. [SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't, there doesn't need to be some moral reason why you don't like an actor. [SPEAKER_01]: Random guy who used his speech to be like [SPEAKER_01]: And opera and ballet are important. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, this is your once-in-a-life time. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, you're, are you seeing a broken shot at Timothy Shalamei? [SPEAKER_00]: It was like so lame. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I thought it was too much.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, any reference to that situation, I thought it was like kind of annoying. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm bravely going to say in this podcast, both that sinners didn't work for me and that I felt bad for Timmy. [SPEAKER_00]: during this broadcast.
[SPEAKER_00]: I did. [SPEAKER_00]: I felt bad for him. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought that he, his campaign, obviously last momentum, he obviously, it sucks that what it took to make Marty Supreme [SPEAKER_00]: that people had towards him and like overexposed him in a way that frustrated everyone. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Now he has to disappear until doing whatever the next one is comes out.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: They cut to him so many times. [SPEAKER_00]: I was just like, I just like everyone's in on like abusing this guy for being someone who like wants to achieve stuff and said something [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it, it didn't feel, and it was a bad night for him already. [SPEAKER_01]: I see a frame got completely shut out like he's already having a bad time and then everyone's like, fuck you, actually, did you know we all love opera now?
[SPEAKER_00]: Truly, I truly think that that was really unreasonable. [SPEAKER_00]: People's reaction to that was really unreasonable, but I think he does, he's just not [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it gets a lot of goodwill that he's like a really confident guy from New York with like a east coast confident young guy energy like is off putting to everybody. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And then dating a Kardashian, I just think Burns more goodwill than it earns. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I mean, sure it opens doors.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure that it is helpful in ways that I'll never know or understand. [SPEAKER_00]: but I don't know, it's tough. [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't have to need arrangement syndrome, but like, even I have a hard time with that because like, I really do hate, I hate the Kardashians and every family. [SPEAKER_01]: I hate the people, it's the same. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I, I don't love that, but it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: It's really not of my business, but it is hard because it's like when you I don't really want to see a Kylie Jenner in the front row of this thing that's all about like film and the arts and like all that shit that they're kind of the antithesis of like it's a tough pill to swallow to like.
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, I think in the same way that I'm sure dating a Kardashian is helpful to Timothy Shalame. [SPEAKER_00]: It's helpful to the Kardashians to have a real reason to be in any of these spaces when they don't actually have the talents or the skills. [SPEAKER_00]: And like [SPEAKER_00]: But whatever, I get that they work really hard and that they are really smart, but I think they are responsible for so much negative stuff in the world and I never want to see them anywhere that I think is like good.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's why, like, if it, uh, I hate the argument when people are like, they actually work really hard to make all the bubble. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, one, they don't compare to like normal people, whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: That's besides the point. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's like, working hard is not inherently admirable. [SPEAKER_01]: Jeff Bezos probably technically works hard too. [SPEAKER_01]: But if you're working hard at doing evil stuff, [SPEAKER_01]: How is that just like innately admirable because you're working hard?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just like incredibly frustrating. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I care so much about the like. [SPEAKER_00]: arts. [SPEAKER_00]: That's it's an it's annoying of me. [SPEAKER_00]: I know I should just enjoy the Kardashians or whatever popular culture that is like very popular with a lot of people but I will never and I will never buy skins and I will never you know I just like as much as I cannot participate in them I want to and it's annoying when they work their way into the shit that I enjoy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: To be clear to anyone listening or watching. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not like we're like, oh, we don't like, we love reality TV. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like it's not mostly communicating about 90 day fiancee. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like not about that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not like about thinking they're like treasured ever. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just like I just do think they're evil. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and have really have wrought bad things upon the world.
[SPEAKER_01]: and that's where it comes down to. [SPEAKER_00]: There used to be this thing that people would say like I had had it said to me a few times that they were like, well the Kardashians are like the closest thing we have to royalty. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, yeah, I don't like monarchy either. [SPEAKER_00]: That's not like, [SPEAKER_00]: something I'm longing for. [SPEAKER_01]: No, it's like that was actually, um, kind of how the, how the country started or whatever was us, not doing that.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like it's also so funny, the idea of it's like, well, we have this monarchy and the seed of the monarchy is calibacy.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's some giant freaky compound and calabassist.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh boy, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Do we have anything else to say about the Oscars? [SPEAKER_01]: Um, there was a really cute moment that was caught on like a side camera where when, um, Michael G. Michael G. Michael B. Jordan won. [SPEAKER_01]: He did a little pointy at Jesse Plemins because they were in Friday night lights together. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love Friday night lights so much. [SPEAKER_01]: And they did a little pointy smile at each other and I thought that was really cute. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, it's [SPEAKER_01]: little like Friday night light, but he's looking at us in the Oscars, um, and also I really like Jesse Buckley, but I really wanted Rose Burn to win this one.
[SPEAKER_00]: I never had any belief that Roseburn would win, but it would have been cool. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's very cool that she was nominated because I do think that is a freaky weird movie that is really daring you to not like it. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And I liked it. [SPEAKER_01]: I just, I don't think HamNet is that special of a movie and I don't think that, that, that, I, I love her. [SPEAKER_01]: I think she's great. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that that's special of a performance.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's that great of a movie. [SPEAKER_01]: But like Rose burn and if I had like said, kick you. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like that's like, that is most most people I don't think could do that like she did that. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I think you're right about that with Rose Burn. [SPEAKER_00]: I liked him that and thought it was, I thought it was a good and special. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I thought it was a really, [SPEAKER_00]: you know, impressively tough performance. [SPEAKER_00]: And I thought I liked it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like hard to say you like ham that because it's such a tough hang. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I do remember when I saw it, I was sitting next [SPEAKER_00]: when she's walking up to, no, maybe it was after they say the name Shakespeare. [SPEAKER_00]: And they go, that's supposed to be Shakespeare and it's like, he said the lines a bunch of times. [SPEAKER_01]: wish I could have seen that movie somehow not knowing that that's the entire central conceit and thinking that these are just random people and then like having this mind blowing to it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's it I feel like I've witnessed people a few times now have be like I didn't know that movie was going to be about a Shakespeare. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like so funny. [SPEAKER_00]: It's central to the marketing I thought but it's okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, why do you think it said, why do you think it had that card about Hamlet and Hamlet? [SPEAKER_00]: What do you think of the things? [SPEAKER_01]: And also, if it just was a random movie about random people called Hamlet, would that not be a little strange?
[SPEAKER_01]: Wouldn't it have not been asked? [SPEAKER_01]: You don't care? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, I can't wait to see him knit that movie about an astronaut in 2057 who goes to space and hang that with aliens and his name just happens to be him knit, I guess. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess that movie him knit pig in the city. [SPEAKER_00]: Looking forward to what she does next and I think it's just cool that Roseburn got to like do the full run do the full awards. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just love her so much.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think she's so great. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, hello we had some technical issues again. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but it's okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, we said our thoughts, and we were done, but we didn't want to end it abruptly, and weirdly, so we came back to say that we're done. [SPEAKER_00]: We're done. [SPEAKER_00]: Goodbye. [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening to our bonus episode about the Oscars. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, don't get like mad at us for any of our opinions or thoughts. [SPEAKER_00]: Please don't get mad at us for any of our opinions, especially the one where I said I didn't, like sinners didn't work for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: The opinion I've been afraid to have all year. [SPEAKER_01]: I know that there's a powerful, anti-the-long walk lobbying group. [SPEAKER_01]: I thought that I don't, don't be mad at me. [SPEAKER_00]: So, that's it. [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening. [SPEAKER_00]: Don't be mad at us. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that'll be our sign off from now on. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's my sign off in life, basically. [SPEAKER_01]: Tell me another conversation, anyways. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening, bye.
[UNKNOWN]: Bye.
